Had a lot going on today so I didn't get out until 3pm. I ran from the house and went and did the Barrel Roll loop. It was perfect weather and just what I needed to end the week. Excited to get a solid 4-5 weeks of running under my belt. I am ready to get going again. 13 miles total.

On a side note I only got whistled at by one guy today. Thankful it wasn't more.

Felt really good with 10 miles left and was steady around 6:30/mile. Averaged 6:53/mile and felt really good. Not a lot of soreness. Ready to start incorporating some speed stuff in the schedule.

Good finish to the week considering Monday-Wednesday wasn't great.

Went and did another long run on part of the 50k course across from Jacob Hamblin. I had a big mileage day yesterday with a workout and wanted to run on tired legs today. The temps were quite warm but it was absolutely gorgeous today.

I was feeling really good and cruising along when at 5 miles my foot clipped a rock and I went down hard. I cut up my hands and both knees pretty bad. I seemed to skid for a little bit but once I stopped I checked myself over and didn't look great. I licked my wounds and kept going. I finished up the Rim Rock and Rim Runner look to get to 11 miles and grabbed my second bottle at the bottom of the hill. I chomped down a guy and started going back up to hit the Barrel Roll Loop. The temps were super hot and I just kept trying to cruise along. At about mile 17 I felt pretty flat but kept seeing mountain bikers so I would chase them down to keep me going. I was a bloody and dusty mess so I got some funny looks. I got down with the loop and actually felt pretty good the last 2.5 miles back up the hill to the house.

I finished close to 23 miles and just over 3 hours 10 minutes which included the crash and burn. I got home and Oliver asked, "Dad, did you throw up on your shirt!" Lots of dirt. Scared Katey a little bit but a fun adventure on the trails.

Woke up from not a very restful sleep and drove the car over to the start. I don't know if I caught a little cold on Wednesday or hae allergies but body wasn't feeling great. I love this race so I really didn't have any expectations other than to grind it out. That was the mantra for the day.

Got to the start and talked with some of the TEAM and was excited for them. Many of them haven't ran a half before so I hoped they would enjoy this one. Race started and just relaxed behind some dudes that were much younger than me. Going up the first big hill and Hayden came up alongside me. He said he was maybe going to do the 50k bandit. That guy is an animal. We just kind of relaxed as we ran along Rim Rock and Rim Rambler. The sunrise was absolutely beautiful. The two dudes dropped me on the downhill and I knew they were trying to break me. Found out that only one of them was doing the full 50k and the other was doing the 30k.  I caught up to them right before the aid station at the Cove Wash Trailhead.

I started working around Barrel Roll and had James just behind me. He ran really strong today. I just started to get into a rythm and enjoy the day. It was slightly overcast which made for a great time. I kept seeing the dude and Hayden in front of me but I knew I wasn't close. Made it back to the aid station before heading out on Blackbrush and Hayden and the dude had a 2 minute lead on me. Not as bad as I thought.

I enjoyed the first part of Blackbrush and knew the climb up to the top would not be fast. My legs started to feel a little flat and I could feel my chest getting tighter. I kept telling myself, "Grind it out." Made it back to the aid station to head out on the toughest section of the course (most fun though), Suicidal Tendencies. James was right behind me and kept going but just wasn't feeling super great. The pickles and orange slices were very helpful at the aid station. James and I were running together when I saw a bunch of gallon water jugs so I decided to stop and drench the hat. This was close to 20 miles. James took off down the trail and I was super flat. I kept moving and James dropped me on the climb all the way to the top of Suicidal Tendencies before we headed back down the mountain. He looked great. I told myself "Grind it out" and that the downhill would help a lot. It did but I still wasn't feeling super great. James was a freaking mule today.

I kind of mentally shut down but as I was coming back towards the aid station lots of mountain bikers and 50k runners heading out kept me moving. My body responded all right and I made it back to the aid station. James' dad asked me if I wanted a ride in his truck to the park. Apparently I wasn't looking great. I refueled and had some Swedish Fish and took off back down towards the main road. I ended up catching a glimpse of James as he was by the main road when I was still at the top. He was at least 2 miles up on me. I knew I only had about 4 miles left so I didn't think I would catch him. I knew that Hayden and the dude were long gone already so I wasn't going to bother catching them. I made it back to the main road and suprisingly felt much better. I kept grinding and and made it over to the Graveyard sections when I looked ahead and saw two runners. James was one of them. I couldn't believe that he was that close to me. He dropped me like a bad habit earlier in the race. I got a little bit of energy and said I am going to go get him.

I caught the first guy who was doing the 30k and pushed to catch James. I came alongside him and talked for a little bit. I planned on finishing with him to help him in but he said to go ahead. We had less than a mile to go in the race. I felt for James because I have been in his spot a few times in the past. Super impressed with how he raced today.

I pushed it in to the finish just over 4:31. It was about the same time as last year. On paper I took 2nd overall. Hayden ran bandit and finished in under 4 hours! Awesome. The one dude who they gave 1st place to finished in 4:15ish. I was happy knowing that I made up a lot of ground over the last 6-7 miles with him. I was happy with the result knowing that I wasn't feeling 100%. Best part of the race was having Norah and Oliver run the last little bit with me and cross the finish line together. Loved it.

Sat around after the race talking with Hayden, the dude, and a few others when I saw Cody Draper cross the finish line. It was fun talking with him and his family. I didn't know he was down.

The race was great for me to do. I learned a valuable lesson with running and life. I kept telling myself, "Grind it out." I stayed fairly positive with good vibes and it ended up helping me the last part of the race. I didn't always feel great but I kept moving forward. That is life. I actually had moments where I thought how lucky I am to have the life I have been given. I kept thinking of Katey and the kids out on the trails. It helped me a ton. Love them lots. It is not how you start but how you finish. Solid day of running out on the trails. I need to do more of this.

Oliver dragged me around the park for a little bit after the race to jog. He didn't have any sympathy for me and how sore my legs were at the time.

Nice race Logan. I'm sad I missed you in the dark at the start. I saw you out front later on and yelled at you but you were in the zone. And I was a mile behind you already. You gotta do more of these trail races. You are a machine! That course is sweet you are a lucky man to train out there. Enjoy the trails!

Pretty dang hilarious. 5:01 was the time and was hopping to dip under 5 minutes. I guess I will have to try it later this year sometime. I guess I am getting old. Met up with Ben this morning and drove up to Monte Cristo and ran back down to Hunstville Park. Really nice of him to join me this morning and take a short break from the Ogden Crew. The temps were 49 degrees when we stepped out of the car. I could see my breath. Awesome!

I was going to do a progression run but switched it to do what Ben was doing. It seemed more fun :) Workout was 10 miles at sub 6:20, 3 miles of 1:1, 1 mile recovery at sub 6:20, 2 miles at marathon pace, and then cool down with all miles under 6:20. Felt good from the start even though I could feel the elevation. The cooler temps made a big difference. Hit right around 5:00 or just under for the 1 min. sections and then did 5:30 and 5:39 for the two marathon miles. I want to keep dropping that pace as the summer goes on. Felt good on the cool down. Hit 6:05/mile for the entire run. Super stocked after this one. Very positive step in the right direction.

Great to have Ben there with me. Fun to see him.

Happy 4th of July! Ran over to Huntsville Park to get some miles in. I was planning on doing the 5k but Norah really wanted to do the 1 mile race so I did that with her instead. She ran a 10:45 and only walked for 20 seconds. She had a great finish! In the middle of the run she said, "This is fun!" Music to my ears! I did another 8 miles around Huntsville and my average was 6:59/mile. 12.4 miles total.

Was going to do a workout this morning in Reno but I didn't know the routes around town and was feeling a little flat. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law live in a very hilly area so I went exploring this morning. My legs were tired from the long drive yesterday. Reno is a pretty hilly place. 7:21/mile and ended up doing a decent amount of climbing.

I think we are going to Lake Tahoe tomorrow so I plan on running around there for a while.

Item off the Bucket list was checked off today. We drove over to Lake Tahoe and I really wanted to run some of the Tahoe Rim Trail. Started at Mt. Rose Summit and ran to Spooner Summit. The whole run I had incredible views of Lake Tahoe. It was absolutely breathtaking. The first 10 miles were nice and relaxed high fiving hikers as I ran by them. I had the next 7 miles be a lot of climbing back to one of the peaks. The last few miles were rolling hills which were a great release from the legs. I didn't start until a touch later but the temps were mid 70s with lots of mountain breezes throughout the entire run. I kept seeing signs saying to watch out for bears and cougars. Luckily I didn't see either of them. I also was grateful to find three big patches of snow so I enjoyed sucking down on that. Probably not the smartest thing but oh well. It was great! One of the best parts of the run was finding a well pump that had freezing cold water to refresh myself. It was on top of the mountain in the middle of nowhere. Awesome stuff. I ended up hopping in Lake Tahoe to reward myself for the run. Spent the entire run above 7500 feet!

25 total miles and a memory I will never forget. Ate at T's Mexican Rotisserie after wards. The veggie burrito was to die for!!!

Didn't get much sleep at all last night. Almost called it but got out the door with Steve. First 6 miles along Dixie Dr. were not pretty but the last 6 miles coming back were nice. Really drained after wards. 7:23/mile for 12 miles total.

8.5 miles this afternon while trying to help one of my former runners, Sage, with his workout. Warm up, 6:15, pushed him in the last 800 (2:30) of his 1600, 6:26, pushed him in the last 800 (2:29), 6:20 and then watched him run a fast 400m finish. 2 mile cool down. So great to catch up with him and see how well he is doing.

Going to be tired tomorrow.

7 miles this afternoon with Katey along the River Trail. Good stuff. Proud of her for getting back into a routine with her running. She is doing awesome!

Solid week again. Wanted to go a little longer today but all the family is in town so we had a ton of festivities planned this morning. Next week will be nice with the Christmas break to get some solid long runs in.

15 cold miles with Steve this morning. Legs and stomach were not great and Steve was nursing a little calf strain so we just kept the pace honest today. Chased the deer in the field along the trail. Almost caught one. Felt like the Tarahumara folk.

A few more miles this afternoon while we did the Chocolate Milk Challenge and White Elephant Gift exchange. Ran a 6:19 and placed top 5. My training is paying off.

18.5 wet and soggy miles mid morning. Slept in to see if the rain would die down and it did a little. Ran from the house, did the Sunriver section, out along the new parkway, down River Rd., Brigham Rd. and then caught the River Trail back to the house. Stomach was not feeling super great due to trying the Man vs. Food Challenge and Ricardo's yesterday. I almost did it. January 2nd at noon will be the rematch.

6:58/mile. Happy with a solid 90 mile week. It has been a long time since I have ran 90 miles in a week. Merry Christmas everyone!

Waited until the early afternoon before it warmed up in Logan and went out in the 15 degree weather. Actually wasn't too bad once I got going. Didn't look at the watch but just enjoyed skidding all over the road. Went up to see the new high school (Green Canyon) and then came back by the university. Lots of memories. 7:11/mile for 12.20 miles. Surprised with how well I felt. Beard was frozen though.

1 more mile around the indoor track at the Logan Rec. Center while Katey ran. Did most of it with Oliver. He is actually a pretty quick little runner.

16 total miles this morning. Much warmer today. It snowed last night so it was nice this morning. 27 degrees when I started today. Ran from the in-law's house and went over to Providence and ran 5 miles with Lily who was in town with her family. Ran back through the university remembering the good old days. Roads were a little slippery this morning but it was another memorable run.

I heard it was 55 degrees and sunny yesterday in St. George. Sure glad I live there.

Happy to end 2016 on a very positive note. Got my base mileage back to where I would like it to be with a few workouts. Excited for 2017. Hoping to race a little more. Happy New Year everyone!
