Met up with Dave this morning to start the new year off on the right foot. It snowed last night in St. George so the roads were slick. I tried going up Red Hills Parkway and nearly slid off the road. I got stuck at the top and started to slide backwards. I ended up sliding until I turned around and went forward in the opposite direction. Quite the start to the year.

We ran from Dave's house and caught the trail behind his house. Did Bracken's Loop and some of Prospector. The snow on the rocks made it absolutely beautiful. Ended up hitting 11 miles total. Great morning.

Met up with James today at the DC to do a loop. We caught the Bloomington Loop, went up through Bloomington Hills into Little Valley and then went to the fields by Staheli Farms. We came back down along Stone Cliff and then caught the trail again. Great loop with mighty cold weather this morning. I had icicles on the beard and moustache this morning. Pretty cold run but great to have the company with James. 19.35 miles total for 7:15/mile. Solid end to the week.

Happy with two great consecutive weeks in a row with my running. I guess having no work will do that. I look forward to getting back to practice with the team and getting in to more of a routine though.

On a side note, I am almost finished with reading Unbroken. Louis Zamperini's story almost doesn't seem real. I need to finish so I can go watch the movie.

Awesome trail run on parts of the new Red Mountain 50k course. It is going to be pretty sweet. Not fast but a beautiful course. I ran from the house and then caught Rim Rock, Rim Reaper, Rim Ramble, Barrel Roll, Precipice, and Black Brush today. I tried some new stuff with hydration and I think it worked. Absolutely gorgeous this morning. The legs were a little flat but that is okay. I wanted to see how I would respond after a bigger mileage day yesterday plus 6 miles of Tinman. Felt good to get a long run in on the trails. I tried meeting up with some of the boys but I just missed them. I saw them going up on Barrel Roll when I was coming down.

Was planning on doing at least 28 miles today out off of Navajo Dr. while playing on the mountains out there. I was a little nervous about the trail conditions due to all of the rain yesterday. I parked the car and got going and only ran in to a few muddy sections on the first loop. The first 14.5 miles went well and I was feeling pretty good. I got some fluids and food and then headed out for the second loop. The trail conditions were a lot more muddy on the second loop because the sun came out and warmed everything up. Only had to hit one potty stop and then really just tried to keep it relaxed. I haven't done a long run like this in a while. Felt pretty good about everything though. 28.2 miles total in 3:46. I think it could have been faster if I wasn't messing around with the mud.

Really glad I had the music today because I was flying solo. I have a bunch of older music on my iPod and probably need to update it. Great way to end the week though. Came home and walked with the family for a little bit to make sure the legs didn't tighten up.

Another week down. Feeling more confident about the upcoming 50k. Should be fun.

I signed up for the Red Mountain 50k and had a bunch of the team run the half marathon today to help support Steve and Kendra at the SGRC. The race course got switched to all the trails across from the Jacob Hamblin home. The 50k did loops on all the great trails out there. Rim Rock, Rim Reaper, Barrel Roll, Black Brush, Precipice, Suicidal Tendencies, and Upper and Lower Graveyard back to Unity Park in Ivins. It was awesome.

Started the race with Dave (he was running the 30k) and some of my boys. We had a couple guys with us on the first climb and I wanted to push the pace a bit. The first 5-6 miles we were pushing the pace and I knew I needed to ease off the throttle a bit. I ended up running a little bit with James on Barrel Roll which helped for conversation but then I was on my own the rest of the way. Got a little lonely but I really enjoyed the scenery. The course measured long at 32.5 miles. Such are trail races with a little extra distance.

I drank plenty of fluids, had 6 Gu's, and ate three bananas with two heavenly oranges. I also wore the Hoka Clifton and absolutely love them for the trails.

I just had a really fun time today and that was the goal. Getting out on the trails is just a nice stress relief. I am considering a 50 miler in the summer. Loads of fun today.

On a side note, 6 of the top 10 were from my team in the boys race and I had one girl place 3rd overall on the women's side.

Great way to end the week!

Finished off the stay in Logan with a great run over to Providence and back. It was great running through all the trees. I absolutely love running in Logan. I am used to running in snow when I come up or in cold weather but it has been great the last couple days.

Happy to have had a solid finish to the week. Legs feel much better. Back to the regular routine. Whatever that is.

Slept great last night and ended up running 17 miles at a pretty good clip to wake the legs up from the long drive yesterday. Went up along the canal trail again and did an out and back from my brother-in-law's house. Eased in to the run and then got moving with some quicker miles. Ended up with a 6:30/mile average. Happy with this to end the week. Love running on this canal trail because it is a nice groomed dirt trail that feels great to run on. Absolutely covered in bugs after the run. People were giving me funny looks. Maybe it was my face.

The Nike Chandler Invite was amazing. The distance crew represented well. Rachel ran 5:31 for the 1600 in almost 80 degree weather! Kale ran 4:25 for the 1600 and almost won his heat. Laynee ran 11:22 in the 3200 to break her own school record. In the boys 3200, Jaiden placed 2nd with a 9:26, Josh placed 8th with a 9:33, and Sage placed 14th with a 9:44! Totally worth the trip down and happy to see everyone run so well.

5.5 miles this afternoon running around getting warmed up and cooled down at the Panther Relays. The Coach's Mile was epic.

I ran the first lap behind Greg Harris and then made a move on the second lap and took the lead. I was feeling good but I knew Dave would come back on me. He caught me with about 40 meters to go and lead for a second or two. I fought back and beat him at the line. Dave said he beat me but he hugged me from behind at the finish line. That means I win. Plain and simple. Coughed for the rest of the night and the legs are tired. The old gray mare he ain't what he used to be!

Lots of fun today having the runners yell at me all the silly stuff I say to them. One of the funnest parts of the track season is always the Panther Relays.

This was kind of a cleansing run. Every once in a while I do silly things like a longer run after a long week. It helps clear my mind. Life is busy with work, family, church, coaching, and running. I feel like I am doing better managing time but I am still busy. Happy with how the team ran this weekend. Some boys didn't have their best races but that is okay. Hey Fielding, I'm looking at colleges and such and I was wondering if you had any suggestions about choosing a college/coach. I'm cool with walking on to a team if I have to or going to a college with a smaller team. Of course I've got a ton of other things besides a coach to look at, but I wanted your opinion on this.

Ankle felt a lot better today. I find a nice bike trail that went north and south from the west side of I-15. I took this and it made for quite an enjoyable run. Lots of trees over hanging the trail and a slight breeze cooled the temps off. On the way back I had two ladies on a bike and they were trying to pass me. I did .5 mile pick ups with equal recovery all the way back to the hotel. I hit 5:20 - 5:30 pace on the pick ups. Nothing great but it did feel good having the body move fast again. 13 total miles. No run this afternoon and just enjoyed a little aqua jogging while the kiddos swam in the pool.

Met up with Dave and James at the DC and ran out towards Santa Clara, Ivins, back along Snow Canyon Parkway, and then back down Bluff. The pace was slow at first but it was good talking with the guys. We picked it up the last few miles and it felt really good. Happy to have lots of water at the end of this run. 19.5 total miles and just beat the 7:00 minute guy.

Decent work and lots of good running. The temps are starting to zap me more. Need to really push the fluids.

We up North with family all week. It should be a lot of fun. Plus, I will get some runs in a bunch of places I haven't ran in a while.

Started at my in-law's house in Logan and ran up towards Skyview High School and looped back around. Got back to my in-laws and went around the neighborhood for 1.5 more miles to get 15 total for the morning. 7:06/mile. Good start to the week. I cannot believe how hot it is up here. I was hoping to get out of the heat.

Went the opposite direction from my in-law's house this morning towards River Heights and Providence. I ran through every sprinkler I could find and that helped cool me off. I ran up Logan Canyon to sit in the Logan River and ice the legs off. It added an extra mile but was totally worth it. 7:07/mile.

Met up with Cody Draper at King Park which is at the mouth of Green Canyon. I ran from my in-law's house up to the park to get a little extra mileage. Cody ran Logan Peak last Saturday so this was his first day back running. We went straight up the canyon and stopped at a natural spring for some water. Very good stuff. This trail is mostly single track and absolutely incredible (outside of the fact that we saw way too many mountain bikers on the trail). Good to see Cody again and nice to on a sweet trail with great company. I caught the Bonneville Shoreline Trail back to my in-laws and got 15.3 miles total for the morning.

I guess Jon Allen was in town and is retired from running so I didn't get a chance to see him. He had Cody tell me "Hi."

Until next time Jon.

I am in Logan until today and wanted to go see Ephraim's Grave. I have never been to it but decided it might be fun to do plus get some sweet trailing in as well. Old Ephraim was the last know Grizzly Bear killed in Utah in the mid 1920s. He was 9 feet tall and over 1000 pounds. His skull went back to the Smithsonian once they killed him. He was known for eating lots of sheep, cattle, and lots of other creatures. I talked with my father-in-law and he gave me some suggestions on where to run. I figured it would be a memorable run. Memorable it was!

I started up Right Hand Fork Canyon and started up RIcks Canyon and caught the Steel Hollow trail. This was some sweet single track running climbing up the mountain for just over four miles. I turned left on Long Hollow Road and dropped quite a bit until I came to Ephraim's Grave. It was pretty impressive to see the rock statue out in the middle of the mountains. I was praying I didn't come across the second Grizzly Bear ever in Utah on the rest of my run! I was going to climb back up and come around Cowley Canyon but I just kept going on Long Hollow Road. It was a dirt fire road that came back to Logan Canyon and the main highway. I didn't think it was that far but it ended up being 9 miles when I thought it was going to be 3-4. I got to Logan Canyon and just came down the highway on the shoulder. It helped because I stopped in the Logan River a couple times to cool off. It was much needed. I finally got back to my car and noticed I ran 23.3 total miles. It was quite the Adventure Run but I survived and saw some amazing country. If I went back around Cowley Canyon the run would have probably been 15 miles. Oh well! Saw lots of animals but was not smart because I left my GU gel in the car and forgot my water bottle.

Sweet run but will do a few things different if I ever go back up that direction. Now heading up to Huntsville for the rest of the weekend.

Met up with Cody and Mike McKnight at the North Ogden Divide to run Ben Lomond Peak (9710') and Willard Peak. I was excited to do this run because it has been a while since I have done. They were nice enough to drive down from Logan and meet up for this run.

Lots of people on the trail but it was fun trying to catch some on the way up and also on the way down. Got to the top and I forgot how awesome the view is. It was incredible. Cody and Mike convinced me to go over to Willard Peak. I have never done it before so it was worth doing. In one of the valleys we saw about 40 head of mountain goats. It was amazing! A little bit of bushwhacking up to the top of Willard Peak and then we came back down. I had some family things so I wanted to get down the mountain really quick. I kind of pushed the pace but it made for a really fun run back to the cars. The cool breeze and mountain air were just what I needed.

The last three days have been all on the trails and my legs are pretty trashed. I was nervous for today and how they would hold up but they felt pretty darn good. Great run today and even better company.

I will probably just do an few easy miles in the morning and then go watch my sister run the local 5k. I think I would need a wheelchair if I ran a hard 5k tomorrow. Have a great 4th of July everyone!

27 miles on the Virgin River Rim Trail up on Cedar Mtn. Dave and Steve planned a long run late last night. We occasionally like to do crazy things. I still wasn't feeling great but thought it would still be worth it. It was great weather and some incredible views. I should have stayed home though. I started to feel yucky 10 miles in to the run. I dragged myself for the next little bit and then my hamstring tightened up. I finally just bushwhacked it up to the highway and did the walk of shame until the guys came and picked me up.

Biggest day for me in a while. It felt good. I have kind of decided that I am just going to focus on the new baby coming in a couple weeks and coaching the team. I will probably do a 2:50 pace group at St. George if anyone is interested in joining. I will be pacing my beautiful assistant Mark Madsen. I just need the rest of the year to not stress and just continue to enjoy running and then gear up for next year.

14 miles this morning down the marathon course for my first time this year. Napped in the bed of a truck on the way up so that was nice. I ran with Steve and Aaron for the first 10 miles and we were moving along with a nice clip. Stopped and got water and then went for it. I just wanted to do 4 miles of a nice push at the end. Yes, congrats to D-Hills! I love keeping up with how they are doing, esp. Bryson, who is a neighbor.

Btw, I've been meaning to meet you. Would love to help out in some small way with the team when available. I work full time so it can be rough. However, during high training (esp. before big meets) it may be nice for some of the runners to get a quick 5 minutes spent on some deep tissue if they feel like they are tightening up, etc.

Just let me know. Also, my middle daughter runs track (she is only in 8th grade right now) but she is good. So hopefully you will be meeting her sometime in the near future as well.

Kept it nice and relaxed on the way out and then on the way back did 15x1:00 min./1:00 min. easy Fartlek workout. Nothing spectacular but it did feel good pushing the body a little bit. 6:50/mile.

Another solid week.

12 miles from the house through Santa Clara and then to Sunbrook and back. Low 40s for the temps made it slightly chilly but overall a solid way to start the week. 6:50/mile.

13.5 wet miles this morning with Hayden Hawks from Ivins and then doing a big loop around Snow Canyon Parkway. Really fun to run with him. It is not everyday that you get to run with a collegiate All-American. 6:47/mile. Now we make the long journey up north to Logan!

It should be interesting running in the snow the rest of the week.

Ice skated around Logan for 10.5 miles. Lots of new snow last night. Fun run but not super fast because it was so slippery. I love the new shoes how they repel water and help keep my feet dry.

14 cold, windy miles this morning from the in-laws out to Providence and back. It was chilly during the run and then the sun came out after I finished. Of course. Roads were more dry today than yesterday. 7:12/mile.

Took the kiddos to Hardware Ranch to see the elk. Lots of fun. Oliver thought the sleigh was Santa's sleigh so he wanted to fly really high.

11 cold miles up in Heber. We are staying up the mountain and so my Dad was nice enough to drive me down. Got away after breakfast and presents because everyone was playing on their phone and so I decided it was a good time to get out. Happy I got out but my body never really warmed up in the 16 degree weather. I survived though. 7:24/mile.

Merry Christmas everyone!

10 even colder miles today in Heber. The temperature dropped to a balmy 9 degrees. I didn't have time for more miles but it was nice to get the legs moving again. Excited to get out of this cold weather. 7:08/mile.

Solid week of training with most of it outside in interesting elements.

10 miles in St. George again. It is good to be home. I have had a little bit of congestion the last couple days so I was hacking that up for most of the run. 6:41/mile. Suprised I went that quick to start the week.

Did the same loop as last week when I did it with Hayden. I ran with no watch today and just enjoyed it. Temps were around 25 degrees. Got some funny looks and comments from people as I ran by them due to me just wearing short shorts and they were dressed like it was the frozen tundra. 13.5 miles total.

8 easy miles while Norah rode her new bike alongside me. No watch and just enjoyed spending time with her being a Dad. Excited to get back to a routine. Body was tired today so I didn't go as far.

Decided to end the year on a positive note. Ran from my house in Ivins to my parent's house in Little Valley. 16 total miles at 6:55/mile. Only got yelled at by one short, squatty kid with a Dodgers hat. "Run faster and try and catch us." I caught up to the car at the stop light and then he didn't know what to say. Also almost got hit by a lady texting while driving. Everyone, please put down your cell phones while in a vehicle. It is not worth it.

Excited for 2016!
