Happy New Year everyone! Ran with James, Dave, and Clyde from my house and did my big, crazy loop. Lots of hills and plenty of enjoyment had by everyone. We all enjoyed each other's company. Long run on the St. George Half course today with Super Glide, Dave, and SteveO. We ran the first part of the course wrong and ended up catching on to the regular course after a few miles. We kept the pace relaxed for the first 15 miles and then we started to pick it up the last 4 miles. Clyde was a frisky little kitten and laid the hammer down. Dave and I kept it right at Tinman pace or just under. The chest felt clear of junk today so hopefully I am making a turn for the better. Just need to be patient I guess. Maybe more garlic as well.

Ran with the boys this morning at the DC. Slighter cooler temps but it warmed up throughout the run. We went towards the Bloomington Loop and then came back to meet up with the club for a bit. Glad we did this because I needed a potty break. We then ran the right STG Half course. Kept the first 14 miles easy and then picked it up. I felt pretty good the last 4 miles finally. I wasn't too far back from Clyde and Dave. Happy to finally hit some decent miles to finish out the run.

I wish I could do the half next week but with this sickness for the last 3 weeks I don't think it would be pretty. I guess it is a blessing in disguise I will be out of town. Excited to see what everyone does. Clyde and Dave are in great shape right now.

Glad to have another decent week. I just want to get back to some solid workouts. It seems like it has been a while. Just keep enjoying running with the guys and grinding it out and I should be fine.

Another Tempo Tuesday run with the guys. It has been nice having James out with us. He is doing really well. I had the mindset of just easing into the 8 mile tempo section. The temps were a little cooler which actually made it quite nice. I just tried to stay relaxed and not overdo it. I ended up hitting the 8 mile section with a 5:43/mile average. Nothing spectacular but it was nice to get a decent workout in after being sick for close to a month. Hope to move forward from this. 14.5 miles total.

Long run with Clyde this morning from the DC. Best part about the run was that Clyde said he liked my beard. I think I will keep it. Looped for 8 miles to Clyde's house and then got some water and GU. Started finally warming up and pushed the last 10 miles. I really just wanted to do 8 miles hard because my legs were still pretty sore from the hill repeats yesterday. Plus, I haven't had too many solid workouts since the sickness. Hit 5:48, 5:43, 5:27, 5:41, 5:42, 5:30, 5:32, and 5:35. I could have finished the last 2 miles but I didn't want to overdo it. Ended up cruising in at Tinman pace. Clyde ran very well again today. I was stoked after the run because I finally felt good in a workout. It has been a while. Cooled down a little bit and ended up hitting 22 miles for the run. Might do some more easy miles this afternoon with the family.

Good way to end the week though! Lots of runners out in full force this morning.

Got a good nap in while the rest of the family was napping. Felt good when I woke up so went out this afternoon pushing Oliver and Norah in the jogging stroller while Katey ran along side. Another big boy run this morning with the Circle and Steve. Started at the DC and then warmed up to Bloomington around to Clyde's house. I learned while running the 11 miles I was in the presence of two published authors (Sir Clyde Behunin and Tier 1 David Holt). Motivates me to be a better writer myself. I have work to do.

Once we got to Clyde's house we all needed to shed clothing because it warmed up quite a bit. Took a Gu and got to 11 miles before starting the tough 10 mile section. My watch was freaking out so the guys had a 15 second lead on me. I wanted to run with them but knew 5:00/mile for the first mile wasn't working so I toned it down. Eventually caught up after a bit. We had to be creative and take it along the road rather than the trail due to construction. The road in front of Maverik dragged a bit but it went all right. I just wanted to feel controlled all run and be somewhat comfortable while pushing in the last 2 miles. Every mile was fairly even and then I went 5:33 and 5:27 on the last two miles. 5:36/mile for the 10 mile section. Felt strong throughout the run and another major confidence boost heading into Phoenix. Things are moving in the right direction.

Spent the rest of the day moving my parents into their new house. Very grateful for many of the XC/track boys who came and helped. It is very much appreciated! Another solid week.

Tempo Tuesday with The Circle and James. James is rocking it out lately. It has been great to see.

Legs were still a little sore from yesterday but I told myself I wanted to just run off of feel today and see how it went. I knew on the warm up that I was wearing too much clothing. It got warm pretty quick. Eased into the 8 mile tempo section and only checked the watch once or twice. Ended up averaging 5:40/mile. That is about what I am shooting for in Phoenix. Not a bad morning workout with all things considered. I should probably not push a hard workout with the team the day before and see what happens. I think mentally it helps to push on tired legs though.

Big boy run with Dave and Clyde this morning out on Utah Hill. Glad I put on my big boy pants and got a good night's rest. We ended up driving down a little farther than planned but the idea was to run up 12 miles and then push it back down to the car. It was a long drag to the top and to our surprise we ended up at 12.5 miles. Measuring distance in the car doesn't work. Took a Gu at the start and then again up at the top. Legs felt a little flat but I knew they would feel better once I got going.

Splits: 5:28, 5:22, 5:25, 5:21, 5:15, 5:09, 5:06, 5:06, 5:08, 5:06, 5:10, and 5:17 for a 5:14/mile average on the 12 mile section. I actually felt very relaxed throughout the tempo section and didn't feel like I was straining too much. I wish I could have finished a touch stronger on that last mile but the road leveled off and my legs were pretty trashed. Glad to get this workout out a few weeks out from Phoenix. 25 miles total for the day.

Might go out later for a walk or a short run to keep the legs loose. #Kroger#WesternFamily#EpicClyde

Ran with the Circle and Riley Cook this morning from the DC. It was nice having him run with us. Great conversation and lots of laughing. Felt antsy this morning for some reason and I knew I needed to be home at a certain time so I needed to hurry home. 5 mile warm up on the Mayor's Loop and then went back up towards River Rd. and back to Man of War Rd. I needed to push the last 2 miles a bit to get home. 5:26 and 5:17 for the last 2 miles. Felt good. 14.6 miles total. Happy to be out with the guys again.

One week until Phoenix. Hope all goes well. I feel confident that I can run well down there.Should be exciting to see what everyone else does.

Ran from the high school over to Clyde's and then did our tempo loop. Almost got ran over by three deer drinking in the stream. Freaked me out because it was pitch black and unexpectedly came on to then. I went up towards Pine View High and then back down by Maverick and caught back on to the trail. Made it to Clyde's and then ran back to the school for a solid 21 mile run. I averaged 7:02/mile.

Norah was up all night being sick so no run this morning.

9 miles total this afternoon. We had the Panther Relays today which is always fun for the team. The ultimate race of the day is the open mile. Dave and I usually do a little trash talking but it was fairly mild this year. Jogged around watching the kids and probably did too many strides. Needless to say, I was warmed up. I decided to draw a Stop Holt sign on my singlet to see if it would freak him out. It didn't.

The race started and I decided to run smart. Dave and Trevor took off like 9th grade boys and went out hard. I hit the first 400 in 69 and told myself to just run. The team was saying all the good stuff I tell them in races, "stay relaxed, eyes up, relax your shoulders, close the gap." Nice to know they listen. I closed the gap a little on the second lap and heard 2:20 for the 800. Nice! Worked closer to Dave on the third lap and then just went for it on the bell lap. Caught Dave on the turn and passed him. Held him off until the 200 mark and then his long legs were just to much for my short, squatty legs. He blew by me and I tried to go with him. Got to the finish line and saw 4:44. Dave ran 4:41 and got me by a few seconds. Darn.

I ended up throwing up in the garbage can after the race. I guess I raced hard. This was a ton of fun and I think we need to do more track meets for adults. It is a great atmosphere and fun for everyone involved. Happy with a 4:44. I just wanted to BYU qualify and hit sub-4:50. Check!

Cooled down a bit and called it a day. Lots of fun today.

Clyde was born 35 years ago so to keep the tradition going, we ran 35 miles for his birthday. We started at the DC at 12:10am this morning. Mark and Steve ran the first loop with us. We did two 12.6 loops around Stone Cliff and Little Valley and then didn't extend around Stone Cliff on the final loop. The temps were absolutely perfect and the moon was bright so it made for a memorable run. We hit 35 miles at just under 4:11 for 7:10/mile. Only needed to survive with three Gu's, pretzels, Heed, a little Gatorade, and water.

This run was quite memorable. Very happy to hit something like this every now and then. I was super tired the rest of the day. I crashed at my parent's house for two hours before I went to work. I wish I could have stayed in bed. Memorable run for sure.

Hit between :38 and :40 seconds for each of them. I then hopped in the last 12 with the boys. I hit :32 to :34 on them. The boys were in front of me for most of them. I had to shut them down at 36 because I needed to get home. They would have kept going if I didn't stop them. Solid workout and something a little different for the team.

Woke up very early (3:15am) to get the run in. Clyde was gracious enough to come and run with me. I needed to go early because the track team was heading up to Richfield for a meet.

We started at my house and then ran out along the Snow Canyon Parkway. The temps were quite warm and then it ended up raining for about the last 4-5 miles once we started to head back.

Once we hit Ivins, a police officer flashed his lights and then flipped around. He asked, "Are you guys okay? Are you doing the Ironman next week?" We told him we were just runners and he wasn't quite sure what to say to that. He drove off and told us to have a great day. This lovely running habit I have :) Finished the run off for a total of 15 miles just under 7:30/mile.

Too much stuff going on this morning so I wasn't able to race. Helped Norah get ready to ride her bike in the parade. She had a blast.

I ended up going and running the trails on Snowbasin. I started at the Art Nord Trailhead and made my way up the mountain. The last time I came up here I saw two moose. In the back of my mind I felt like I might see another one. As I was just cruising along, I came around the turn and saw a big bull moose sitting in the trees enjoying the shade. I stopped at looked at it and sprinted past it when it turned its head to eat. Got the heart pumping but still a very cool experience. Crossed the road and went on the Green Pond trail. Made it to the top and then came back down. I really enjoyed this run and was happy to get a solid 10 miles in today. I love the trails on Snowbasin. They are some of the best around.

4 more easy miles this afternoon in the heat. I needed to soak the hat and put ice cubes in it. Cannot remember the last time this happened in Logan. Solid start to the week.

Katey woke up with me this morning and was nice enough to drive me out to Avon (just past Paradise) to get the workout in. It is a nice rolling section of road that I spotted the last time we were up here. Katey dropped me off and then went on her own little run.

2.75 mile warm up to Paradise, potty break, and then got going. Plan was to hit a 6 mile tempo. 5:34, 5:29, 5:32, 5:31, 5:25, and 5:31 for the 6 miles. Had to take a slight break between the 5th and 6th mile due to some issues. Finished strong and felt happy about the effort. A little bit of a cool down until Katey came and met me at 11 miles. Good run this morning.

I watched the Brazil/Germany game and was super bored. My German ancestors are probably dancing right now. It was overcast so I went 3.5 miles this afternoon on the River Trail. Felt great this afternoon. 7:14/mile. Sat in the Logan River after wards. I really wish we had a cold river in St. George so I could do this everyday. It made the run totally worth it.

I have always wanted to run the 30 miles through Logan Canyon just started above Bear Lake. Seriously considered doing this but due to plans I cut it short for a solid 20 in Logan Canyon. Katey took me up just past the turn off for Tony Grove. I only had 4 VRPBs this morning (Clyde would have been proud) and set off just wanting to get a solid long run in. The temps were amazing and the slight cold breeze made it absolutely perfect. Not a ton of traffic early which made it very nice. Saw three deer along the Logan River which was pretty cool. The river kept the temps perfect. Pushed it the last couple miles and hit 6:24/mile. Stopped at my favorite icing spot and sat in the Logan River to reward myself. Totally worth it after a good 20 miles. Happy to get this in not knowing how busy we will be the next two days of traveling.

I am going to miss Logan weather. It has been hot but the mornings are amazing!

Happy with the week of running even with all of the family stuff going on. Hope to hit a little longer tempo on Tuesday and then solid workouts on Thursday and Saturday. Tempo Tuesday with the Circle. Knew it was going to be interesting when I saw 84 degrees on the thermometer. That is too hot for 5am in the morning. We did the old tempo loop out in the fields. Warmed up 3.5 miles, VRPB, and then got started. Just wanted to run and not stress about looking at the watch. I just wanted to listen to the body. Ended up hitting 5:40/mile for the 7 mile tempo run. Pretty happy with the run considering I was drenched in sweat. It is good to be home in the heat! This was one of those character runs for the Circle. 13.1 total miles. Ran a little bit for warm up and then during kid's camp. I filled up the tubs for the kids for an ice bath. They needed it and have worked hard to deserve it.

Ran a warm up with the team at Chelsi's Run and then ran the race with Katey. Should have maybe ran it hard but ended up not doing it since I thought it was more important to run with the Mrs.

Katey and I went and camped at Big John's Flat near Eagle Point up above Beaver. We needed a break from the heat and I wanted to go some of the trails we will do at camp. Absolutely breathtaking up there. Ended up only having time for 5.15 miles. It was getting dark pretty quick.

Started at the trail head and went towards Blue Lake. I ran into a ton of elk and deer on this run. 50 degrees when I started and 63 degrees when I finished! Some of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen in my life. This was an out and back route and was worth every bit of time it took to do it. Running at 10,000+ feet really takes some extra effort and concentration. I ran into some scouts and only a few hikers. Nice and quiet. I had the trail to myself. Perfect way to end the week. I can't wait to take the team on this run. Pushed it back down to the meadows at Big John's Flat to get a nice push at the end.

This was one of top 3 places to trail run next to West Rim Trail in Zion and up near Snowbasin. I loved this run.

Nice finish to the week. Felt nice to get out of the heat for a bit and happy to have some solid workouts in the bank.

Today was a very special morning with the team. We hiked/ran up to Delano Peak (12,169 ft.). Highest peak in Southern Utah. Absolutely amazing. I need to get Katey up there.

1.75 miles this afternoon with our relay. The coaches' team did well and took top 4 out of all the groups. We did a .25 mile loop but did it 6 times. Sat in Puffer Lake afterwards which felt great again. Hard to go anaerobic when you are at 10,000+ feet. Saw some great things from kids today.

After watching Prefontaine as a team I took some of the team up to the dumpster. Every night they have a bear come down and chomp on stuff. We got close and put the lights on and watched the bear eat. He had to be at least 400-500 pounds. Pretty cool to see but sad he had to eat garbage.

The Circle + Steve + Haydo for a bit met at my house and then we drove 26.2 miles up towards Central. We ended up just above Brookside and started there. Lots of adult conversation and weird jokes for the first little bit. I felt pretty tired at the start but just told myself to continue working into it. Stopped at mile 8 for water/Heed w/a GU and then again at 16 for the same thing. The temps started to pick up quite a bit but I was glad I brought my sunglasses. They saved me today.

The guys picked it up around mile 19 and I just kind of hung back. I knew we had some good hills coming back into Ivins. I feel fairly confident and strong on the hills. We had three decent hills to climb up and so I decide to take one last GU at mile 22. It was a great shock to the system and I decided to really push the last little bit back to my house. I didn't really look at my watch but I knew I was progressively getting stronger. I finished that last 5k with all the miles under 5:30 and the last one at 5:24. I was happy with this type of a finish.

We did stop at mile 25 to hit the splash pad real quick so the last mile could be enjoyable. It was! 6:25/mile and hit just over 2:46 for the full marathon distance. Legs are a little sore but it didn't help that the XC team washed cars for a few hours as a fundraiser. I need a nap.

Happy with the way the week ended. School officially starts and XC is in full go mode. It should be exciting. Dave and I talked a little about the upcoming season. Apparently I am a little orny this time of year according to Tier 1. Good times. Happy to run with such a great group of men.

Got my running stuff on along with the other coaches and did a mile warm up, 6x:30sec. hard/:30 sec. easy with a slight cool down. Not too bad but way more happy about how the team did today. A move in the right direction for sure. 2.5 miles total for me.

Ran easy down the marathon course with The Circle. Like to stay off the marathon course as much as possible but knew we needed to get a little bit of downhill training.

It was super dark for the first 10 or so miles and Clyde unfortunately paid for it by literally barreling into a barrel. I lent him a hand but he felt like I was laughing at him. That was not the case. He took ridin' dirty to a whole new level! Lots of traffic didn't help either. It was super busy.

16.60 miles with 6:44/mile. Felt good and look forward to doing a big boy workout on Saturday down the course because it will most likely be the last free Saturday I have until the marathon.

Felt good to run with the guys again. It has been too long. They seemed to be fine after running such great races on Saturday.

2.55 miles from Jacob Hamblin after hiking a bit with the kiddos over there while Katey ran and I checked on the team. Good start to the week.

3 miles this morning. Legs were a little sore from yesterday but felt okay.

Very hot this afternoon running at Little Valley Park. Took our top 8 boys and top 3 girls to do this workout since they were not running. 2 mile warm up, 6x800m and then 4x400m with a short cool down. I would alternate running with the boys and the girls on the 800s. Hot but they felt somewhat easier then I imagined. Hit 2:33-2:36 with the boys on 4 of them and just over 3:00 with the girls for 2. I ran 1:10 - 1:14 on the 400s. 7 miles total. I was plum tuckered out after the workout. I guess I am getting old.

The meet was hot tonight. Glad to see the team gut it out though. So proud to coach such a great group of individuals who want to work together as a team!

Big Boy Workout (Mini today) with The Circle. Did the usual warm up and then got going. Plan was to hit 4-5 miles today since Saturday is the more important workout for me since it will probably be the last time I get to go on the marathon course before the race.

Hit 5:27, 5:22, 5:24, and 5:31 for the 4 miles today. Happy with this and then just eased into it until I met up with the guys. They ran well. I am really trying to be smarter about things with my training and not overdo it. I think my body will thank me later for it. 15 miles this morning.

Woke up really early (3:45) to meet the guys at the finish of the marathon. We drove up and got started around 4:45. My stomach was not feeling great but I knew I needed to work through it. Aaron and Steve took off and I just clicked off miles under 7:00/mile. Ran with Clyde for the first 9-10 miles while having a couple potty breaks. Much needed. My plan was to push the last 11 miles to see how I felt. Stopped at the top of the volcano to get fluids and got going. Here are my last 11 miles worth of splits:

5:34, 5:22, 5:25, 5:31, 5:23, 5:21, 5:34 (up Winchester and also caught up to Steve), 5:24, 5:17, 5:16, 5:25.

Very happy with the way this turned out. I felt really good these last 11 miles. I hope to use this as confidence heading in to the marathon. I was excited how I finished the last couple miles in town. That is usually a bit of struggle for me. 20.5 total miles and 6:00/mile for the entire run. Sweet!

Hurried over to the high school to time the time in our first Michigan workout of the season. Everyone rocked it out. I ran back and forth hollering times to the boys and girls. Very impressed with how they did today.

Not going to be a really long race report. I really wanted to hit 2:25-2:26 today and things were looking good up until the half and then diarrhea and stomach issues wrecked my day. Such is the life of running a marathon.

Got out with the Dave, Ben, Mike, and Trevor Baker and just relaxed the first couple miles. The boys were antsy and I dropped back a bit after I dropped my bottle at mile 3. I knew I would catch back up with them on either Veyo or the other rollers after that. Sure enough I did. I closed the gap on Veyo and felt pretty good. I was only about 5-10 seconds back of Ben and Dave and told myself just to keep that distance until I hit the half point. As I got closer to the half point, my stomach turned and I had to take a road side stop for a bit. I had bad diarrhea and never have had this happen before.  I got back out on the road and really tried to close the gap again with the guys but my stomach just would not calm down. I hit the half at just over 1:14. I knew I could still get my 2:26 but my stomach didn't want to cooperate the rest of the way. My breathing was messed up for the rest of the race. I just kept grinding and knew some of the high school boys would be at Chuck-a-walla.

I made it to the high school boys and they were gracious enough to run with me the rest of the way. I appreciate them helping me in. It wasn't pretty but I finished. 2:31 and change for 16th place overall. Fairly bummed with the race but such is life. Just happy to see the family after wards. That helped knowing that Norah thought I won the race. I didn't have the heart to tell her I wasn't close at all.

Very happy for everyone else who ran today. Lots of good times, PRs, and placing from many others. The Circle minus me ran well today.

I think that this race gives me extra incentive to call it good on competitive marathoning. The Circle talked about this being the last but I think Clyde and Dave should still give it a go. I enjoy being on the trails more and will probably look at doing more of that.

On a side note, I talked with Nick Schutze (bib #1) at the start and he remembered me from 2007. He told me he wasn't in great shape but was getting back into it. He ended up dropping back to our group and he and I went back and forth for most of the marathon. He finished just in front of me and talked with me again at the finish line. A really solid guy and it was nice chatting with him.

Also really good to see Jeff Shadley, Ben Vanbeekum, and James Barnes. Really solid guys as well.

Awesome to see you again this past weekend! Sorry about the GI issues, I have had that experience too often lately. You ran well despite the issues.

As we talked about, running is only part of your life right now so keep this competitive thing in perspective. See what is next in store for you after taking a break and focusing on coaching, kids, family, etc.

I will be talking to you again soon. Wish I would have found you to talk to Justin...maybe a call soon!

5 easy miles this morning. 2 miles before meeting up with the team. Slightly warmer this morning.

Kicked a couple field goals to have some fun with the team. I kicked a 40 yarder with my running shoes and short shorts on. It would have been good from 45 yards. Not to brag but I still got it. Leg is sore now.

3 more miles double checking the 2 mile route for tomorrow.

We went and picked my parents up from the airport in Cedar so I didn't get my run in until late in the afternoon. I pushed Oliver in the stroller again and it was fun. I was sore because he cannot sit still to save his life. He is bouncing all over the place. I enjoy spending time with him though. We saw lots of motorcycles, birds, and big trucks. Absolutely perfect weather today. I love this time of year. 10.5 miles total.

5 miles this afternoon pushing Oliver in the stroller while Norah biked alongside us. She wanted to go this far and only needed to stop twice. I am very proud of her. Oliver drew the easy stick today and just sat in the stroller until we got to the park. He did run a little bit once we got there though.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Much to be grateful for this time of year. I most grateful this year that I don't own a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle. Some clown kept drifting through traffic and standing up trying to be cool. He almost crashed once while standing up. My Dad calls them MODs (Mobile Organ Donors). Never want to get one of these.

14.5 miles this morning running from the house over to Little Valley Park. Absolutely perfect morning. The temps were a little warmer which made it a lot more enjoyable. Just kept it chill and enjoyed the day. 6:57/mile. Hit up the annual Fielding soccer match for Thanksgiving. A true American sport :)

Lots of good things happening today for a Saturday. Hope it all works out.

7.10 miles this afternoon after raking up leaves. Did a new route and one that I will for sure do again. Still out by Sand Hollow with Katey's family. Ended up doing the opposite loop around Sand Hollow Golf Course. Caught the Turf Sod Rd. and hit fire road around the mountain towards the new Highway 7. Once I caught the new highway I picked up the pace a bit to get the average down. Almost caught a couple road bikers but they took off on the downhill. Made my way back around the mountain and the wind started to pick up. With only a mile to go it started to snow!!! It was pretty cool running in the white stuff here in Southern Utah. It made it a special Christmas day. 7:00/mile for 12 miles.

Felt kind of like the infamous Dave Holt. 16.4 miles total. Ended up seeing Laynee running with her Dad. Fun to see the kids getting in the work prepping for track. Solid way to end the week.

I am happy that I was able to hit 80 miles for the week with everything that went on. Really starting to feel stronger again. I like this break from work where I actually have time to take naps in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day with my family. My wife and kids are great. This is such a fun time of year.
