| | I slept in today for my last day off of work. I wanted to go longer but I decided to spend more time with Norah. I started at the house and then ran out along Snow Canyon Parkway and almost made it to the old running store. I averaged 6:35/mile. Very happy with that. Nice way to start off the new year. |

8 miles this morning over into Santa Clara and back. 7:36/mile. Nice temps this morning. I came home and pushed Norah in the jogging stroller for 4 miles around Ivins. It was funny when I was spitting and Norah turned around and said, "Daddy is a camel." She then proceeded to spit like a camel. I need to be very careful. It was pretty funny. Apparently I spit a lot.

| | 10.10 mile club run this morning with Dave and Clyde. The temps were nice and cool at 28 F. We kept the pace honest and it was nice to get a good run in with the guys. 6 miles this afternoon. Ran with a bunch of the kids today for a little bit and then I decided to do a 2 miles a little faster than goal marathon pace (I needed to see what the legs had in them. It has been forever since I've moved fast). I hit them in 5:16 and 5:18. I was happy with this effort. I didn't die and I actually felt pretty good. I need to do this more often. Good way to end the day.

| | I was not feeling very good this morning so I slept in. I ended up going out after work. What a glorious afternoon! I did my Bloomington Hills Loop with the actual loop. I just kept everything relaxed and enjoyed the weather. My legs were a little tight. I ended up averaging 7:15/mile. |

| | 3 miles with the team this afternoon and I then did another 5.30 miles around Webb Hill. The best part about the run was that the dirt section by the freeway is getting paved. This will help so when the team or I do tempo runs we do not have to slow down for that section due to all of the rocks. I wanted to get a little push and ended up averaging 6:20/mile. Excited for a long trail run tomorrow with the guys. |

| | Great long run with Dave and Clyde this morning at Little Black Mtn. We did two loops out there. It was mostly dark on the first lap and we ended up running 1:13:33. I told Clyde my record for the loop (1:03) and I could see that look in his eyes and how bad he wanted to go after it. It was amazing to see his true grit and determination. I ran with him for the first couple miles of the second lap and then I stayed back for a minute because I knew Dave was still recovering from being sick so I wanted to help him out a little. I pushed the pace but felt controlled. Clyde smashed the record and I ran 1:00:02. That is comparable to running a 4:01 mile and never going under 4:00 minutes. I should have gone under 60 minutes for the second loop. Dave came in just a little after me so it was nice to see all three of us have a solid second lap. Great weather this morning. Happy with the first week of running for 2012.

| | 10 this morning with Clyde, Dave, and Steve. We did our usual loop. It was nice having Steve back with us. It truly was a pleasure. Felt pretty good throughout except for the spinach dinner from last night. 10 more miles this afternoon out towards to the new airport. I ran with the kids for 2 miles and then extended it out onto the parkway. Not a ton of traffic but lots of wind. I do not like wind. It is not my friend. Averaged 7:19/mile. Happy with a pretty solid day of running.

Paul Petersen ran 2:20:31 and placed 55th at the Olympic Trials. He is my hero. It is fun to think back to 2007 when I was in New York running in the 2008 Olympic Trials with him. I didn't have a great day but Paul did. His race today is even more impressive to me. 4 years later and he is still rocking it. The guy is so humble and gracious about this sport. I look up to him a lot. I will miss running with him in Logan when I visit my in-laws. Congrats Paul! Dogtown/Lots of hills run - Ran with Steve, Clyde, Dave and Justin today. We started at Dave's house and then went out into the fields, down by Stone Cliff, over Foremaster and then back around. We had some pretty conversation about topics that were quite delicate. I really look forward to running with the guys because it is a great place to just talk about life. Dave and I extended for another 5 miles to get 20 for the day. Nice way to end the week. Happy to get in 90 for week. 7:00/mile. Fair amount of hills today. Felt good for the little Quadsimodo.

| | Dave and I went out and ran the Little Creek Section of the Zion 50 today. For the most part, I think we found the correct trail. We did the first 13 or so miles up to the tower and did most of it climbing. We pushed the uphill and it made both of us a little tired. We stopped at the top and enjoyed the scenery. Their is nothing like looking at Pine Valley and then turning to look at Zion National Park. Absolutely breathtaking. We were around 7:00/mile on the way up and then Dave said I went into Beast Mode. We clipped along for 6+ miles at 6:00/mile in the dirt and sand. We ended up catching the 7:00/mile guy for the run. Nice to get out and have a solid run with Dave. I am excited to train with him for the next couple months to see how we do at Zion and then Squaw.

| | Club run this morning from Clyde's house with Dave and Clyde. Nice run. Saw a lot of people out this morning. They must be getting ready for the half marathon this weekend. Happy to run with those guys again. Ran another 10 miles this afternoon. I ran the first 3 or so miles with the kids over towards Sunriver and then I extended it all the way through the beautiful town. I lost track of how many elderly people I saw who were walking their dog. Nice to see people out and about though. 6:49/mile.

I kept the first half easy and then did a little workout on the back. I did 10 x 1:00min. with 1:00min. recovery in between. All the fast stuff was in the 4:50-5:00/mile range. Nothing spectacular but it was nice to open up the lungs. Glad I am not running the half this weekend. I will be in Phoenix where it supposed to be pretty warm. Nice solid run today.

| | Arrived in Phoenix late last night and was pretty tired when I started my run this morning. My family lives downtown so I was nervous about where I was going to run. I ended up finding a trail along the canal and followed that out for about 5 miles. It was actually a nice paved trail and had a few dirt sections. The decoration of choice was shopping carts in the canal! I think I counted 20 or so. I did the run at 6:50/mile. Nothing fancy but good for being pretty tired this morning. About 50 degrees when I started. Short sleeves and shorts. Loved it. Now for the footie game tonight.

| | We got back from Phoenix late last night and I was not really tired this morning. I then had my graduate school class all evening. Plus, it was still raining when I finished. I decided to get some homework done and then enjoy time with the family. This gives me the opportunity to try something I've wanted to do. I am going to try and hit 90+ miles on only 5 days of running. We will see how it goes. Busy with lots of stuff this week.
|
| | 10 miles this morning in the fog out along Snow Canyon Parkway. The trail was quite slippery so the pace was nothing fancy. Actually warmer than most other mornings. 13 miles this afternoon from the high school, out to George Washington Academy, looped around Stone Cliff, hit the DC trail, and then came back around Webb Hill. Descriptive! Nice afternoon considering the weather this morning. 6:45/mile.

Nice long run this morning from Ridin' Dirty, UT along Snow Canyon Parkway all the way to the finish line of the marathon. We kept it nice and slow which helped me get through the run this morning. I am not feeling well so I knew I was in for a long haul. I actually felt okay during the run and had a pretty fast last mile but then started to get sick right after I finished. Head cold and sinus problems for the rest of the day. Not fun. Didn't get my 90 miles for the week but oh well. I need to get better. I cannot remember the last time I was sick.
Hopefully next week can be better. |

| | I was crazy sick this weekend with a head cold and a lot of congestion in my lungs. I ended up staying home from work and tried to sleep to get better. | | I didn't sleep at all last night and still did not feel 100%. I ended up staying home from work since I could barely breath and was coughing a lot. I needed to be on the safe side. Once again I kept sleeping and doing a lot of the Emergen-C. That seemed to help and I decided to go back out this afternoon to see how I felt. I felt a little better but still not great. I went all through Ivins hacking and coughing but it helped loosen up the congestion in my lungs. Yoga later this evening with Katey which felt really good.

We kept it relaxed and casual which is the way it usual is. Nothing exciting to report but just getting it in. Another 6.15 miles with some of the girls this afternoon. | | Ran with Dave this morning out on Utah Hill. Nice and chilly for the first loop. I was a little tired and could still feel some sickness in the legs on the hills. I was a little worried if I would last after the first loop. We ran back down to our vehicles and I drank some Powerade and ate some granola bars which gave me a little pep in my step. Dave suggested that we do the full loop for a 2nd time to get 28 miles for the day. I knew being sick all week and not feeling great on the first loop would add up to not being a great end to this run. I finally convinced Dave to just go back out for 3 miles and then we came back. We will save the longer stuff for a little later. Ended up hitting 7:21/mile. Nothing crazy exciting but a solid trail run nonetheless. Happy to finish this week on a fairly positive note considering I was sick all week. Hopefully I can get feeling better so next week is much better. Dave is an animal!

Nothing spectacular but a solid way to start the week.

I added a mile up the mountain before I came back down to get a little bit more mileage. Ran into a lot of cows today. They looked at me like I was crazy. Fun stuff. I also ran in to an older guy who was shooting guns with the boys. I ran by and he said, "That does not look like a lot of fun." I replied, "I think it is fun." That was my 3rd grader response. I wish I could have thought of something better to say. Nice solid trail run for a Thursday. Happy to get some good climbing in today.

Goal was to hit 85 miles this week so I planned on doing just a little over 14 miles for the day with a workout thrown in there. I started at my in-laws and ran to Skyview High School and then looped back through downtown Logan. At the high school I started my workout. I did 10 x 2:00 min. hard/2:00 min. easy. We ran into Steve and Billy Boy so they ran with us for the last couple miles. I dropped Dave off and then extended up along the freeway and over to the Washington Parkway exit. Pushed the last couple miles to beat the 7:00 minute guy. Hit 6:54/mile. Solid way to end the week. I was planning on 90 this week but graduate school and family was more important some days. 82 is the new 90. Plus, Dave and I have a 30 mile trail run planned for Monday so I am not stressed out. | | Nice long run this morning with Dave out on Utah Hill. We did two loops and extended just a little on each one to get over 30 for the day. The first loop we seemed to be huffing like we were chain smokers but the second loop seemed to be better. I think it was due to the cold air (also, I chucked a couple times on the first loop and that seemed to help). With all the potty stops and everything we were at 3:51 for the run which included 3,200 feet of climbing. Legs were sore after but the ice bath helped a ton. Solid run with good conversation (Dave said on the second loop, "We need to see a ram so we can be motivated to climb these hills." I couldn't stop laughing. We saw nothing but cows!)

I was planning on racing Dogtown with the rest of the circle but I could never get in touch with Steve so I slept in so Katey good do a church thing. It looks like I missed out on a good one. I ended up going to the two Desert Hills state championship games for basketball. Both teams lost so it was quite a bummer. I ended up going out after I got home while my Dad rode his bike alongside me. 70 degree running weather! We started at my house and then went over to Ivins Reservoir. I pushed the hills (plenty of them) and raced my Dad up them. I ended up hitting 6:36/mile overall. Nothing fancy but a solid push with the hills. Happy to get the run in. Lake to Lake Relay (52 Miles) 04:50:05, Place overall: 1 | | Did the Lake to Lake Relay with the Circle and Aaron. I did legs 1, 5, and 8. I wanted to make sure I was nice and warm so I did a few miles before the guys came and picked me up. I did leg 1 starting at Gunlock and going to Highway 91. A Dixie State runner flew out to a large lead while I was sitting in 2nd place. His teammates drove by and yelled at me, "Game Over!" We were not half a mile into the race yet. I caught up to him by the first mile while Dave and Clyde drove by and yelled, "Game Over!" I had a good chuckle. I ran 6.07 miles in 5:16/mile. Solid start to the day. Leg 5 went from Cotton Cove Park up the hill over towards the Bloomington Loop and ending at Man of War Bridge. 4.07 mile in 5:29/mile. Climbed for almost 2 miles. Leg 8 started on our tempo loop and went over towards the Washington Dam Bridge. Good amount of climbing and then close to 2 miles on the dirt to finish with a good hill for 200 feet just before the exchange. 5:42/mile for 4.7 miles. Finished the relay in 1st place overall with a new course record by almost 20 minutes (the course was a mile longer also). Dave and I jumped into Sand Hollow where the water was 40 degrees. I sat in it for about 10 minutes and called it a day. Happy to get in some solid fast miles. I can tell focusing on hills has helped but I haven't done as much on the road. Oh well! Focusing on some 50 milers right now. A great day running with the guys. Love being the third tier of the Circle.

| | 10.20 miles this morning with the Circle of Trust and Wildbull. Good times and enjoyable conversation as usual. On the drive to work, I hit something in the road and had one of my tires literally blow out! I stopped to fix the flat and put on the spare when suddenly it started to snow. What? I was freezing while I switched the tire. My lucky day I guess.
7 miles this afternoon in more wind. 2 mile warm up and cool down with 3 x 1600m repeats with the top boys. We did a little different workout today but it was still a great push for them.

| | Two loops out on Little Black Mtn. with Dave. Trevor Thompson joined us for the first loop which was fun having him along. Kept the pace nice and relaxed for the run. Right around 1:10 for each loop. Kept looking at the mountain where Dave and I will be running on Monday. Should be interesting! Ready for the Big Kahuna, Whole Enchilada, Mother of all Mothers, and Joe Montania for Monday. Have not ran that far ever at one time. It should be a memorable run though. Great way to start Spring Break.

| | Ran the Big Kahuna with Dave and part of it with Justin today. We started out on the Arizona Strip just over 5000 feet elevation and did 3 different out and back sections. The first section we went down 8 miles and then climbed close to 2000 feet for the 8 miles back up. The next section was the big one with 9 miles out and back. The final section was an out and back for a total of 16 miles for this one. Dave told me that their would be a lot of climbing but I didn't realize how much we would run. We climbed close to 6000 feet today and topped out at close to 6500 feet elevation. The weather was warm for a little bit and then cooled down. The final section was pretty hot but we survived. We ran the 50 miles in 7 hours 10 minutes. Pretty jazzed about that! We had a slight run in with a cow during the last 2 miles where he looked like he was going to charge us. We summoned the cow whisperer in us and he stayed away. That would have made for a rough end to the day. Very pleased with the run even though some sections were a little slower than others. I feel more confident going into the Zion 50 and Squaw Peak race. This was a killer workout but I am glad we did it. Most miles I have run at one time! Ice bath and stretched after wards. Hopefully I do not get too sore.

I ate a burrito before I ran which did not sit pretty but it was manageable. Pushed the last little bit with Aaron to finish the run. Legs are finally starting to come back around. |

| | Met up with the guys this morning. I got there a little early so I could get some miles in. Got just over 4 in before the others showed up. It was pretty warm on this part of the run so I made sure not to take gloves. It was 54 degrees and I should have left the long sleeve shirt home. Next time. Kept the pace nice and relaxed for a while starting at Sullivan SOCCER Park, down by Staheli Farms, over by George Washington Academy, down River Rd. and then "Quadsi" kicked in at Foremaster so the pace picked up a little bit with Clyde. We ran up past the freeway and then back towards the WCCC and back down to the park. Fair amount of hills and ended up hitting 6:58/mile overall. Happy with the run and end to the week. I would like to get more miles in for the upcoming race but I realize that anything between 70-90 is when I race best. Plus I swamped with graduate school so it seems like I am always tired. Clyde talked about deer urine or something like it this morning that is supposed to help with recovery. Maybe??

Got up and was running with Clyde at 5:15am. We started at his house and then ran all the way to the new airport along the parkway. I couldn't see the hills since it was dark but I could feel them. It was a rolling course the whole way in both directions. Kept it relaxed for most of it and then pushed a little for the last couple miles. 6:57/mile overall. Solid way to end the week.

13.20 miles this morning. I did an easy 3 miles before I started with the guys. We then did the usual loop from Clyde's house. Fun conversation as usual. To minimalist or not to minimalist? That is the question.
Did a little bit of a workout with Brigham. We did a mile warm up and then a 2 mile time trial. We were on pace to break 10:00min. but Brigham cramped up a little bit with 2 1/2 laps to go. He will qualify in the 2 this year. One mile cool down. Played glow in the dark capture the flag. Lots of fun but a fair amount of running involved.

| | Dave and I went out this morning to run the big hill up onto Gooseberry Mesa and then spend the rest of the time on top of the mesa. Dave kept telling me about the hill and told me it was a fun one. It was dark when we got started and my eyes seem to be getting bad so I could not see the hill up to the top. As we started climbing, we ran into 15 or so deer. It was pretty sweet seeing those to get the running juices flowing. We started up the hill and Dave and I looked at each other and said, "Screw this!" We power hiked up to the top with our legs and lungs hurting. We hit about 18:40 for the mile. Wow! We both made a conscious effort to not hurry up this hill during the race. It is only about 4 miles in so we want to conserve for the rest of the race. We got to the top and ran right along the rim of the mesa the whole time. It was beautiful. It was a lot of single track which was a lot of fun. Both of us were not able to get into any kind of rhythm so it was a little frustrating. We did 8:30 - 9:30 miles but it felt so much faster. Lots of sharp turns and jumping and climbing over rocks. Ultra baby! We ran into a couple mountain bikers which was nice to see. Planned on going a little longer but we were both short on time so we had to turn back. We both realized that the first 16 miles of the race we just need to conserve our energy and not stress about and then the last 34 miles will be easy :-) Really glad we got out and ran this section of the course. I know we are both ready. It took us close to 4 1/2 hours to run today. Yep, 4 1/2 hours! Trail running is a lot different than the road. The Zion 50 race will be sweet though.

I was super tired from the drive so I slept in a bit. I got up and ran from the hotel over towards Logan High. It was a balmy 23 degrees at the start but nothing except blue and sunny skies. It warmed up pretty quick and the cool air actually felt really nice. I wish I could have gone longer but lots of family stuff going on. 6:57/mile overall. Happy with hitting 90 miles for the week. Just need to keep plugging along. I am excited to see what Dave and I can do in our upcoming races.

| | Decided to sleep in this morning after a fun weekend in Logan. We drove home and I made it back in time for practice. I did a track workout with Darian. We did a 2 mile warm up, 2x200m, 1x800m, 1x600m, 1x400m, and 1x300m with a 2 mile cool down. Solid workout but it was pretty hot. 7 miles total. I ran home from the high school after practice to my parent's house to eat dinner. I planned on doing this last night so it was nice to get some more mileage. It was pretty hot outside so I needed to take 2 water stops along the way. I ran towards the Bloomington Loop, along Dixie Dr., down Sunset Blvd., and then up through Santa Clara. Happy to get to my parent's house and sit in the cold pool for a while. 6:40/mile overall for 12 miles. Solid way to start the week.

| | Clyde Behunin was born 33 years ago to this day. Sometimes I wonder how he must of felt like coming into this world. Shell shocked and excited is probably how the little guy first saw the world. It just seemed like yesterday he first joined us in this small journey we sometimes call "life." We went to dinner on Saturday night at La Frontera and Clyde brought up the idea that he wanted to run 33 miles for his birthday. Dave, Steve, and I looked at each other and decided that would be one of the craziest things to do. Running 33 miles wasn't that bad but doing it at 12am (midnight) would make it that much crazier. Sure enough, we all decided to meet at Clyde's at midnight and run with him for his birthday. I am sure our wives thought we were clinically insane. We started at midnight and did our old tempo loop for close to 13 miles and then did our normal Wednesday morning Clyde's loop x 2. We did those loops in reverse today though. I was basically running on empty the whole time since I hadn't sleep in what seemed like days but we all survived and now have something to talk about for the rest of our lives. We did the 3 loops in just over 4 hours. Dave, Steve, and I decided that Clyde's birthdays suck and we either want a magician or a clown for next year. Happy birthday Superfly! You are truly one of a kind :)

Usual morning run with the guys. Nice conversation and happy to get some more miles in. Little sore but the ice bath last night helped. First track race ever tonight. I hope to break the 5:00 minute barrier! We had the Panther Relays today and it was a really good workout for the kids. Their was an open mile at the very end of the meet. Dave and I decided to do it a week or so ago. I had never ran a track race before in my life. I was fairly excited to do this. I warmed up a little bit with some strides and then got to the starting line. Plan was to hit anything close to 5:00 minutes and I would be happy. Dave and I ran right next to each other for the first 3 1/2 laps and then he got me the last 200 meters. Those long, beautiful legs of his are not fair for my short, fat legs. He got me by a second or so but I was happy with my effort after running 33 miles the other day. I ran 4:51 for my first 1600m race. 1:14, 1:13, 1:13, 1:11 were my splits. It was lots of fun even though I lost. Still a Tier 2 runner and coach! Did a little bit of a cool down to call it a day.

| | 9 miles this morning over on Barrel Roll with my dad riding his mountain bike. Lots of people out for Memorial Day (mountain bikers). My dad told me to just take off and so I started to chase 2 mountain bikers. They took off up the mountain and thought they were going to drop me. I caught up to them in less than a mile. I dropped them and they were totally surprised. It is always fun to see bikers be astonished of runners blowing by them. Pushed the last 2 miles back to the truck and felt great for a Monday. Hopefully it carries over to this weekend's race. |

| | 3 miles this morning over to Santa Clara and back before going to the hospital. I was going to go a little longer but decided against it. I am glad I did because we were in labor and delivery for the rest of the day. Oliver Logan Fielding was born at 9:25pm. 7 lbs. 12 oz. Poor guy looks just like me. Hair all over his body. (Pictures will follow).

| | 6 miles late this evening at about 10pm. Spent a long day at the hospital and ended up doing a ton of homework since I was at the hospital with the new baby the last two days. I got out later than planned but it was nice because of the cooler temps and quiet streets. I really like that every now and then. Nice and easy. |

Squaw Peak 50 (50.75 Miles) 09:38:33, Place overall: 7 | | Stayed in Heber with some of Dave's family last night. Great people and they also had great food. Woke up and felt pretty good. I didn't know a ton about the course except that it was going to have a lot of climbing. The race started and Dave, Scott Jaime, Jody Benson, and I take it out nice and easy down to the trail just past Bridal Veil Falls. I took the lead for the first section of climbing not really knowing where I was going. Scott took the lead a couple miles in and I never saw him again. That guy is seriously part mountain goat. Dave pushed up the mountain and I held back in 3rd place to not overdo it early on. We kept climbing and climbing and I made it to the top of the first aid station sitting in 3rd place and just about a minute back from Dave. I knew the next section would drop down a little and it did. I was feeling pretty good through this section down from Squaw but had Jody catch me on the next climbing section. He got out in front of me but I kept in my sights until about mile 20 or so and then passed him. We went back and forth and even ran together for the next 6 miles or so down to where my dad and Ferron (Dave's dad) were. Jody and I both stopped at our respective personal aid stations and then started running up Hobble Creek. Once I hit the pavement, I did not feel great for some reason. Jody decided to take off. I knew Dave was only about a minute in front of me still. I kept moving along for a few miles until I came to my dad and Ferron again. I grabbed some fluids and food and I saw Dave walk around from the back of the car. I didn't expect to see him there. He said he was not feeling good at all. I told him we should run together for the next little bit to see if he started to feel any better. We finally got off the pavement and started to climb some more. I asked Dave, "When does the climbing stop?" His reply, "It doesn't!" I stayed with Dave for a mile or two and he told me to go. I was a little torn because I knew he needed my help. It was like Zion all over again but the roles had been reversed. The first place girl caught us and I knew that I needed to get past her and keep moving. I passed her and kept power hiking/running for the next 10 miles or so. I was sitting in 3rd place at this point and feeling pretty good. I still had no idea what laid ahead on the course so I was cautiously optimistic. I extended my lead once I got to the top. I felt awesome from miles 33-41. I was in cruise control and was really happy at this point. Everything felt great and I was rolling. Once I got to Windy Pass, I looked to my left and the first place girl came bushwhacking through the trees with her pacer. They must have cut out a mile or two of the course. This made me mad for some reason. I made it to the second to last aid station and she went passed me. I just finished Born to Run again and the first thought out of my mind was "Brujita." I was in 4th at that point and started to make the descent. The trail was covered in rocks so I had to slow down. I kept clipping my toe and almost falling. Every time I did this my calves and quads would get tight. This did not make me happy. I tried to relax down the mountain but it was not happening. I made it to about mile 44 and then the next guy passed me. He was smiling and laughing as he passed me. What a jerk! I wish I was smiling and laughing at this point. The wheels started to fall off and this point. I really started to cramp up and had to wake for a bit. Just before the final aid station, I got passed by a good friend Shaun Martin. He was flying! I made it to the aid station sitting in 6th place but was toast. I knew the last section would be pavement to the finish and I was not excited. One other guy passed me and I knew I could get him. I passed him with about 2 miles to go and then we hit a small hill and I was done. I stopped in the road and started to walk. I wanted to cry because the last part of the race was not going great. I kicked myself in the behind and pushed to the finish. I probably looked like death but everyone cheered as I went by. 9:38:33 and 7th overall. Happy to finish the race but knew I had a great chance to run well today. It just didn't happen. Dave came in about 10 minutes behind me. I was happy to see him finish strong. I knew he wasn't feel 100% either. We both soaked in the river after and cramped up the entire time. We tried stretching each other out but it did not help. We gave each other an emotional hug and told each other we will do better next time. It was not a great day for either of us. Better luck next time. We both agreed that we shouldn't have ran Zion two weeks ago and should have done some more hill training. I know I should have at least. 14,000 feet of elevation change just plan tired me out today. Hopefully I can learn from this and do better at the next race. I plan on doing some 50ks for the rest of the year. I don't know which ones I will do yet but I am not stressed out about racing right now. School is busy and will get busier and with Oliver here I just will have to be extra smart with my time. Running is still great but I don't want to stress about it a ton right now.

| | A flu bug is going around the house so I took care of everyone this morning. We went for a little walk which seemed to help though. I ended up getting out the door around 12:30pm in the afternoon. It was very hot and windy. I soaked my shirt and hat and took a water bottle. I went along Snow Canyon Parkway and just kept it relaxed. I had to stop at one of the ponds to drench the shirt and hat again. I survived but hope to not have many runs during the hottest part of the day. Happy to get a week of recovery in. I think I can get going again. Congrats to Cam Levins from SUU. He won the NCAA Championship in the 10,000 and 5,000. That is incredible to get this double. Very impressive.

6.60 miles this evening. I took the truck in to get "new" tires and then ran home from the auto place. Decided I needed to push it a little tonight. I ran from Bluff and then all along Sunset through Santa Clara and back home. I was sub-6:00/mile for the first 4 and then just relaxed the last 2 miles. 6:22/mile. Nothing fancy but it felt good to push the legs for a little bit. |

| | Ran from my house and hit the trails across the street from the Jacob Hamblin house. I ran all the way over to the Green Valley Gap. I forgot how much fun it was to run on those trails. I was cruising along and all of a sudden my foot caught a rock and I took a good little tumble. Luckily my handheld was with me because it helped brace my fall. The downside was my lid came off and most of my water was gone. I survived and can live to tell about it. Great day to be out running. Perfect weather. Hit a decent week for what I could do. Kids were sick most of the week and I had a ton of homework for school. Hope to get a little more next week though.
In honor of those running Ragnar this weekend, I had 5 roadkills of mountain bikers this morning. Loved it. Blew by them like they were standing still.

I didn't sleep much due to Oliver but I survived. 5 miles with the boys over to Little Valley Park and back. Got a much needed drink that helped a ton. Met up with Ben Vanbeekum this morning at the North Ogden Divide. We ran to the top of Ben Lomond Peak. He has never done it before so it was quite the experience for him. We started at about 6100 ft and climbed to 9720 ft. Good climbing up to the top and then enjoyed the downhill on the way back. Happy to get a great trail run in this morning. Overcast conditions with a little bit of rain made for one of the best runs of the year.

We are in Logan for the weekend and I finally got out around noon. It was more hot and humid than expected. It was cooler than St. George so I am not complaining. Took a nice long drink at Lundstrom Park at the end of the run. I didn't go as long today because I am doing a longer trail run with Cody and Joe tomorrow. It should be fun.

|
| | Trail Run! I waited until Cody posted on his blog and then copied and pasted his post. I did tweak it a little though.
Today I was graced with the presence of Mr.
Joe Furse and Mr. Cody Draper. Yep, I felt honored. It was nice to be able to enjoy
the sweet trails around Logan with some fellow running nerds. My personal goals were to enjoy the run and see some wildlife. On the drive up we saw a cow moose on the side of the road and then when I was leading the parade, two cow elk ran across the trail. Mission accomplished!
Today's mission was to run a large section the Bear100 course (why
not?). We had to do a bit of a shuttle to get the cars all set up, but
we still hit the trails just after 6. We ran from Temple Fork (mile
45.1) to Logan River Aid (mile 69.5) then continued on down the Franklin
basin road (2 more miles or so) to the car. (This paragraph is from Cody but I still think it is pretty funny). Before we ran
today, I looked up Jon's 2010 race splits so that I could have a "ghost
runner" so I could get an idea of how fast one must run to break 21
hours on this brutal course. (* Disclaimer) To be fair, we sort of
skipped the first 45 miles and 12K feet of climbing he did before he got
to Temple Fork. Plus we called it a day at mile 70 when he got to keep
going. So, even though we destroyed the splits of his ghost runner, he
shouldn't feel too bad. So, the splits I got were these: Temple to Tony Grove - Jon - 1:45 - Us - 1:15 Tony Grove to Franklin Aid - Jon - 1:50 - Us - 1:27 Franklin Aid to Logan River Aid - Jon - 1:45 - Us - 1:28 Jon - 5:20 - Us 4:10
Yep, your math is right, we ran 2:51 seconds a mile faster. Take that Ghost Jon! (*see disclaimer above). Thanks Joe and Cody for a
great time! Joe and I threw down some sub 6 miles over the last 3
miles leaving Cody slightly in the dust. Not by much though!
T-4:26 (10:00) Elevation: (not that anyone cares...)
5404' vert (Bear100 site) 5800' vert (SportTracks) 5650' vert (Garmin Connect) Solid end to the week and happy I could get two great trail runs in this week. I think this Logan trail run was one of the best trails I have ever ran. I need to get back up there again. Happy with this quality type of running while on vacation. I am ready to get back and get a solid week of running in with the team before we head up to our summer running camp. It should be fun.

| | Was supposed to run with the Circle this morning but was up until after 2am getting stuff ready for camp. Sorry guys! First day of camp up in Brian Head. We set up camp this morning and then went for a good run. I went with the boys for 7 miles. We started at the Lodge and then went out on the Sugar Loaf Mtn. trail. It was relatively "flat" but a solid push for the boys. Nothing like running at 10,000+ ft. to open up the lungs. I could tell the kids were a little zapped from the elevation so we drove up the main road 3 miles and had the kids run back down to the cabin. They thoroughly enjoyed it. I guess I enjoyed it too.

It was a little overcast so it made for an enjoyable run. Glad we made the trip over. It was about 55 degrees for the run! Had a fun relay race tonight in downtown Brian Head. 4 miles with some of the girls along the golf course. Did another 3 miles over to Hidden Valley and back. Nicer temps this morning but still hot. Ran this afternoon from our house over to my parent's house. I hopped in the pool after. It felt great. Opening ceremonies were a little lame in my opinion.

|
| | Ran down the STG marathon course this morning with the guys. Started half way up Veyo Hill and ended at the church. I had to go a touch shorter because I needed to get home for some family stuff. Mostly ran with Clyde and Aaron today. Aaron took off a few miles in and Clyde and I put it into cruise control. We picked it up in some spots but just kept it relaxed. Clyde had to stop for the potty so I took off and pushed the last little bit. 6:15/mile overall. Happy with the effort. This run may have convinced me to try and do St. George this year. Maybe?
|
Mizuno Wave Elixir 7 Miles: 16.15 |
|
| | 6 miles doing Webb Hill Extension before practice. 4 miles with some of the girls. They were going longer but I had to cut back sooner because of a school retreat I needed to attend for my graduate classes.

| | 14.25 miles this morning with Clyde. We flirted with the idea of doing some tempo miles but Clyde's ankle is still not ready for it. We did the tempo loop and just extended it a mile by Clyde's house. 7:07/mile overall. Crazy muggy this morning. 6.10 miles with the girls for practice. We ran the Webb Hill extension today. Solid run by the girls. I now have my top 5 all together since two were gone with family vacations for a while. Cautiously optimistic about the girls this year.

We met up with some of the guys who were at youth conference so it was a great excuse to get out of the heat. Temps were nice and cool plus we saw a few deer. Lots of fun. | | 3 easy miles over to Hidden Valley. Got a little rain this morning which was very much appreciated. Ran 7 miles with the boys over to Little Valley area. The wind was blowing and it actually helped cool down the temps. I think more of the kids are getting used to running in the heat. Still very hot. We did 6x:20 sec. strides at the end of the run. Solid way to start the week for the team.

Did the workout with the boys this afternoon. We did a Fartlek workout at Little Valley (1:1, 2:2, 3:3, 4:4, 3:3, 2:2, 1:1). Very good workout for the boys. Happy with how it went. 7.75 miles total.

I think I am going to pace these guys the second half of St. George this year. My training is not really training with graduate school and everything else. I am taking the next year to just kind of wing it. Not very fun but I'm sure it will be interesting. 7 miles this afternoon with the boys out in the desert reserve plus 6x:20 sec. strides at the end of the run. Very hot this afternoon. Solid run.
|

Santa Clara Swiss Days 5k (3.25 Miles) 00:17:11, Place overall: 3, Place in age division: 1 | | I am home alone this weekend so I decided to hop in a local 5k in Santa Clara to support those affected by the flood. I warmed up from my house to the city offices. I needed a VRPB before the race started. I knew going into the race I would be lucky to hang with Hayden Hawks (runs at SUU) and Tommy Ingalls (Snow Canyon's top runner). I wanted to hit 16:30 and call it a day. The race started and I settled into 3rd place fairly comfortable. I could see Hayden and Tommy just in front of me. I was only about 15 to 20 seconds back from them. I don't wear my glasses when I run and I wish I did today. I was about 2 miles in and I was supposed to take a side street but ended up running all the way to the light. I knew when I got there I was going to be longer than 5k. For some reason I get lost in races. Just ask Paul Petersen about Top of Utah Half for 2007.
I made my way back on the course and saw the 4th place guy who was behind me the entire race. I was not going to let him beat me when I knew I ran longer than he did. I blew by him and ended up finished in 3rd with a time of 17:11. I ran .15 extra for this race. I was just under 16:30 for 5k on my watch. Bummer! Decent race. I am not in racing shape at all but I know this next year is going to be whatever with the running due to graduate school and how time consuming it is. I am going to pace Dave for the second half of the marathon next week so that should be fun. Still running but not stressing about it right now.

I cannot believe how hot the weather was today.

| | 5 miles this morning with team around Webb Hill. Didn't run this afternoon because I went up to Cedar with Dace and his wife to watch Darian and Laura run in their college race. Both did great! Darian was in 1st for the most of the race and ended up taking 2nd overall. Impressive.

This is sort of a race report but not really at the same time. I am not in marathon shape and haven't stressed about running due to graduate school and everything else keeping me busy in my life. Things should settle down next May when school is done. I decided to pace Dave Holt for the second half of the marathon today. I drove up to Snow Canyon and snuck on to the course while dodging the police cars. I ended up hiding in a few bushes. I ran up to the half and waited for Dave to show up. Crazy seeing Jon and Fritz hit the half in 1:10:00. Smoking! They both finished strong. Saw Dave coming about 5 minutes later and I jumped in. The weather was not cold but it was not as cold as in past years. Started chatting with Dave and he was in about 15th or 16th place at the time. Kept it relaxed and let the downhill help us. I ended up getting Dave's bottles for him and helping him stay relaxed. I almost got kicked off the course a few times because I did not have an official race bib. Oh well. I didn't drink any of the fluids on the course so I felt justified. Tyson Boyer hopped in with about 5 or so miles to go. Dave was doing well still but I could tell he was hurting. Kept telling him to be positive and try and catch some guys. Made it to the finish line and cut off the course with Tyson to make sure no one would be disqualified. Dave ended up running just under 2:30. Really stoked for him and glad he ran well. We ended up hitting 5:37/mile for the second half.
It motivated me to just keep doing whatever I can right now and then get going again next May. Another fun day pacing.

Cold enough I needed to borrow some gloves (mid 30s). Great morning for a run though. Good to meet up with Clyde again. 5 miles pushing Oliver around Santa Clara and Ivins while my sister and Dad rode bikes next to me. Lots of fun doing this. Oliver fell asleep in the stroller. Best week in a long time. I think I can maintain 70 miles a week through the winter. This is manageable. Might consider hopping into a spring marathon.

| | Super tired this morning due to working on a paper late into the evening. Only got 4 easy miles in this morning before a long drive to Phoenix. |
Brooks Launch (2012) Miles: 4.00 |
|
| | 10 miles in the morning around the Mesa streets. Headed west from the hotel and just kept it going. Didn't hit too many lights but ended up really enjoying the run. Fun to run in different territory when on vacation. 3 easy miles with the team to shake the legs out. 3.5 miles this afternoon with the team running the Nike course and then did strides after. Solid day.
|
|
| | Stayed up late finishing my paper. I was seriously trashed so I slept in. Graduate school is kicking my butt. The team ran okay at Nike today. The boys were in the championship race and then girls were in the open race. Both teams did not place as high as I thought they would but still ran okay. It was an extremely stacked year with fast competition. I try to continue to be a better coach and need to fine tune a few things for next year to make the team better.
|
| | 3 easy miles this morning. 7.15 miles this afternoon. Ran over to Webb Hill and did 6x2:00 min. repeats. Ran a few with the girls and then a few with the boys. Cooled down back to the school. Good start to the week.

Dave has never been on the trail so it was nice to introduce it to him. Perfect weather and tons of fun. Lots to be thankful for this year!

| | Met up with Steve, Dave, and James by Staheli Farms. We started in the dark and made our way on the trail out towards Sand Hollow. We looped around the back side of the hill going towards Warner Valley. Dave saw a "fun" sand hill and suggested I go up it. Not one of the brighter things I have ever done but it was something I can check off the bucket list. Great trail run today with the guys. |

| | Very tired this morning. 4 miles this afternoon down along the golf course. Not a ton of time for stuff this afternoon. .50 miles running back to the house to get a flashlight to fix my flat tire. |
|
| | Only did 4 miles this afternoon. I planned on more but I needed to get home for Norah's ballet performance. That was a lot of fun. |
Brooks Launch (2012) Miles: 4.00 |

| | Went up with the Circle this morning at Vernon Worthen to do a different route. It was raining quite a bit but still felt good. We started up towards Snow Canyon Parkway and then caught the trail that went through Dixie Downs and followed Dixie Dr. all the way down to Southgate. We headed towards the Bloomington Loop and then came back along the River Trail. We ran up Bluff Street to the park. Lots of puddle jumping and good times. I am glad Dave is not mad at me anymore. 6 miles this afternoon. 3 miles with the team up in the snow behind the school and then another 3 miles to Hidden Valley. Hands were freezing. |

| | 6 miles total this afternoon. I did a 3 mile warm up out along the Arizona Strip and then did a 3 mile tempo run back to the high school. Felt pretty decent during the tempo section. I need to get this type of run in at least once a week. |

| | Ran from my in-laws house in Logan this morning out to Smithfield and back. Did kind of a loop. Nice fresh snow to run on this morning. The temps were actually quite nice. | | Took care of sick people all day. Finished off the year with a big fat 0 miles. Looking back on the year I am happy to have been able to run still while in graduate school. Life has been extra busy in 2012 with the addition of a new baby, new responsibilities, and everything else that goes on in life. Got 2 solid 50 mile races in this summer and happy with the results. Looking forward to being done with graduate school in May and then back to training.
