Ran over into Santa Clara with blue skies and the temps being just a little cold.  Great day for a run.  Half way in to the run I stopped at a river and threw rocks to break the ice.  Not sure why I did that but it was fun.  6:26/mile.  The pace was honest and a great start to 2011.  Hope I can accomplish my goals this year.  2010 was having the legs really get used to running again.  Happy New Year everyone!!!

6 miles this morning in 2-3 inches of snow.  Yes, it snowed in St. George.  It was pretty fun running in this kind of weather.  I don't get many opportunities to do this.

6.15 miles over into Santa Clara and back.  I was relaxed on the run until a pitbull starting chasing me from someone's house.  I went anaerobic for a while just to make sure I didn't get eaten.  I was upset because the owners didn't even do anything.  I averaged 6:07/mile.  Yes, I was not very happy.

4 miles in the cold morning.  It was really chilly but glad to get a run in.

8.60 miles this afternoon.  I hurried home today and did a speed workout from my house over through Santa Clara.  The plan was to do 1 mile easy and then 1 mile hard.  I wanted to hit the faster mile under 5:20 pace.  My splits were 5:13, 5:10, 5:19, and 5:19.  The last two were on a slit up hill but I pushed through it.  I averaged 5:56/mile for the entire run.  Nice to get a solid workout in.

Cool down around the neighborhood after wards.

I ran with the kids this afternoon.  We looped around Webb Hill and then I tacked on a few more miles after wards.  7:14/mile overall.  A great way to end the day.

Ran with Dave, Steve, Aaron, and Clyde this morning while learning the new SG Half Course.  It is a nice loop course and is pancake flat.  We kept it relaxed on the first loop and then did the 2nd loop quicker.  A couple miles at the end right around 5:30/mile.  6:28/mile for the entire run.  Good to run with the guys again.  A little chilly though.

Slept in this morning and just ran this afternoon.  I ran from the high school out towards George Washington.  I pushed the pace because I needed to get back for a conference call with Utah State.  I have a student teacher in my classroom for the next little bit.  It should be kind of fun.  8 miles at 6:03/mile.  Nice start to the week.

6 miles this afternoon with some more of the boys.  It was 60 degrees and felt great today.  The extra long sweat ring on the shirt grossed them out and let me know it hasn't been this warm for a little while.  Took it out along River Rd. through the Industrial Park.  I wasn't able to see the new airport though.

I started get a head cold last night and it didn't get better through out the night.  I couldn't sleep and I guess I kept Katey up tossing and turning.  I bagged the run this morning and drank a lot of fluids throughout the day to see if it got any better.  The weather was nice but I decided to hit the treadmill inside to see if I could sweat it out.  I did 2 at 7:03/mile, 2 at 6:00/mile, 2 at 5:27/mile, 1 at 5:12/mile, and 1 mile cool down barefoot.  All the football players were looking at me like I was crazy but oh well.  I hope I cleared everything out.  I felt good throughout the run but will have to wait and see how everything feels tomorrow.

Ran the half today and was not sure how it was going to go because of the head cold all week and lack of speed training.  I was shooting for 1:12-1:13 with not feeling 100% and felt like I could handle that.

The gun went off and just kept everything nice and relaxed.  I felt good through the first lap and was running mainly with Dave and Clyde.  I extended a slight lead of only a couple seconds and hit mile 9.5 and my nose was clogged and I could feel the effects of the head cold really kicking in.  I was right on pace through 10 with what I wanted today but the last 5k wasn't happening.  I wanted to be done but I decided to push through this.  To add injury to insult I had to maneuver my way through runners on the 2nd lap which made for quite an interesting finish.

I was happy to finish and push through the yucky feel of being sick.  Happy to see many other bloggers run so well.

I need to get my butt in gear now.  No questions asked!

I was up north taking care of some family things and stayed with my grandparents who live in Huntsville so I could run part of the Ogden Marathon course.  I ran with Ben VanBeekum today and it was good catching up with him.  We started at 7:30am and it was a balmy 5 degrees.  We ran up towards the monastery and then along the marathon course over towards Eden.  This section of the marathon has some good rollers so I was excited to see what would happen.

We did a 4.35 mile warm up and then did 3 x 2 miles with one mile recovery in between each set.  I had frost all over my eyelashes and eyebrows so I was curious to see how the splits would pane out.  Here they are: 1st set - 5:22, 5:25, 2nd set - 5:21, 5:38 (3 decent hills on this section), 3rd set - 5:26, 5:29.  We then cooled down back over to my grandparent's house.

I was very happy with the times especially with how cold it was.  The sun came out eventually and by the time we finished the run it warmed up to 8 degrees!  Really happy about taking a warm shower after wards!

Another good workout on the track.  I was a little worried going into this due to the wind but I knew I needed to push through this to give myself some confidence.

I did a 2 mile warm up and then a 2 mile cool down and then did 6 x 1000m with 200m recovery and then finished off with 4 x 400m with 400m recovery.

My 1000 times were 3:09, 3:09, 3:07, 3:06, 3:06, 3:07 and my 400 times were: 1:11, 1:12, 1:11, 1:11.  Very happy with how this morning went.  Great start to the day.

Ran with Steve and Dave this morning.  We started at Dave's house and then ran over to Coral Canyon to run the entire Dogtown Half Marathon course.  Pretty hilly course and it doesn't help that it runs right by the dump and then has about a mile worth of dirt which could literally break an ankle.  I am glad I am going to be out of town so I don't need to do this race.  We kept the pace honest and pushed the last 8 miles into a progressive tempo.  The last couple of miles were sub-5:45 pace.  We averaged 6:33/mile for the entire run and the weather was just right.  Great run with the guys.

Another solid week and I am happy I hit all of my workouts.  Need to keep hitting the big workouts and hopefully I can continue moving in the right direction.

Met up with Dave and Clyde this morning at the DC for a big workout.  It was nice and rainy this morning.  It seemed like I was carrying a bunch of extra weight around with how heavy my clothes were.  We did 8 miles for a warm up and then did 6 x 5:00 min. at marathon pace with 2:00 min. recovery in between.  The first 4 were really solid but the last 2 I could feel my sickness kicking in.  I was sub-5:20 on each one and hit sub-5:15 on a few.  The last one was slightly uphill and I had to really work for that one.  We cooled down for about 3.5 miles and called it a day.  Solid way to end the week and happy to have a longer weekend.

Katey and I were planning on going up north this weekend but we didn't go due to the weather being bad.  I decided late last night to hop in the Dogtown Half Marathon and use it as a nice workout.  I figured I could pace others throughout the race for a nice push.  I got over to the start and did just over 3 miles worth of warm up with Dave and got ready to go.  It was rainy and windy so I told Dave to just draft off of me for how ever long he needed to.  I didn't wear the Garmin but rather used the handy Timex.  We went out and Theo Martin came with us.  Dave tucked in behind me for just about 8.5 miles and then he took off.  I turned around and waited for Steve and then pushed him in.  We were able to catch a guy who was just in front of us.  I was happy to see Dave take 2nd and then Steve finish very strong.  I did a 2 mile cool down with Dave and some of his high school boys and called it a day.

Happy to have a solid 3rd workout in for the week.  I feel great right now but just need to stay healthy and hope everything keeps going in the right direction.

Met at Clyde's house and ran with Steve, Dave, Clyde, Aaron, Nick, Bill, Amber, and her friend from across town.  We did 2 x 10 mile loops.  The route is not the easiest but would be great for a workout.  We took the first loop real easy and then picked it up the 2nd.  I stayed with Aaron and Nick for the first couple miles and then dropped to about 15-20 yards behind them.  I was feeling strong but then 7 miles into the 2nd loop I started getting blisters on the bottom of both my feet.  I slowed down and pushed it in with Dave.  My feet were not feeling good.  I hit low 5:30's for the 7 miles and kept it honest for the rest.  I averaged 6:31/mile overall.  I wish I could have finished stronger but with the heat and my socks, blisters were likely to occur.

Better weather today in Logan.  I ran from the in-laws up into Logan Canyon.  I ran along the River Trail and then went all the way up to Spring Hollow Campground.  I forgot that the headwind can be quite nasty through the canyon.  It was really beautiful in the canyon.  This time of year it is difficult to find any place more beautiful.  It was a little muddy in spots but a really nice trail run.  Slowly starting to feel a little stronger each day.

I ran from my house this morning and then did the Barrel Roll trail twice.  I ran the trail counter clockwise and then went back out and ran it clockwise.  I really wanted to focus on hydrating because that has been my problem in the past.  I had the Camelbak and then a hand held with Cytomax in it.  It worked out perfect.  I wasn't trying to worry about how fast I was going but just enjoying the moment.  I ran the entire run in just over 2 1/2 hours.  Nothing fancy but a very good trail run.

On my second loop I caught up to a mountain biker leisurely going up the hill.  He saw me coming and then kicked it up another gear.  Always fun chasing bikers!

This is my best week of running in a long time.  Just need to stick with it.

We are staying up in Huntsville so I decided to go run the trails up by Snowbasin. I talked with my grandpa and laid out a route last night. It seemed fun until he said I would either see moose, bears, or mountain lions. This is not what I wanted to hear.

I woke up early and started running at 5:00am. I started at Wheeler Canyon and then started climbing up the Art Nord trail and then over to East Fork getting moving right along to Green Pond. I wasn't even 1.5 miles into my run and a huge cow moose was standing in the middle of the trail. It was about 40 yards in front of me so I just stopped. It was still pretty dark so I wasn't sure if a calf was around. I was going to bag running this way because the moose stood there for 10 minutes. I went back down the trail and came upon a mountain biker. He was cool and let me run with him. Strength in numbers! We didn't see the moose again which made me really happy. It got my heart racing. We got to the start of the East Fork trail and my new mountain biking friend, Tracy, said he needed to "bust it loose" on his bike. He "bust it loose" and I caught him while 1/4 of a mile. I blew by him and he never passed me again. I felt guilty since he helped me out but he was just going to slow. I came around a turn on the East Fork trail and I ran into another cow moose! This one was only about 10 feet away. It heard me and started running up the mountain. I nearly p++d my pants and went anaeorbic for about 1/2 a mile just to make sure the moose didn't eat me. I was reminding myself to thank my grandpa for the moose sightings!

I got to Green Pond trail and went over to Snowbasin Lodge. There was still a bunch of snow so I "skied" down some of it to the lower parking area. I then got the trailhead that went up to the Ogden Canyon overlook. I almost made it to the top but had to turn back because we had family things going which I needed to make on time. I saw at least 20 mountain bikers going up this section of the trail. Every one of the mountain bikers were really cool and moved off the trail when I was coming down. Mountain bikers are much cooler than road bikers. I came down Icebox Canyon and eventually made my way back down to the Art Nord trail. I ran 21.25 miles in just over 3 hours. Not very fast but I was always worried about seeing another moose. I had over 2000 feet of elevation gain I ran today. I topped out at just over 7100 feet. It was some really good climbing today. One of the most memorable runs I have ever been on. This is some of the best single track trail running I have ever done. I also had some incredible views. I wish I would have taken a camera. Next time.

I never felt very tired today which was a good sign. I think using two handheld water bottles will help me out in my upcoming 50k. I think I will have to run this again but will make sure I have someone else with me.

Solid way to end the week. I would have gone longer but had family duties for the rest of the day. We ended up going to watch a National Sheepdog Trial with Norah. She loved watching the sheepdogs herd all of the sheep. Fun stuff!

I was in Huntsville with my family celebrating the 4th of July. My mom signed me up for the 10k and told me I should win it. I haven't any real speed work since March so all I wanted to do was make a good workout out of it and not be trashed after wards. This 5k, 10k, and 1 mile run is now a memorial run for Rob Burton. He was a good family friend of ours when we lived up there. He was recently killed in a car accident just a few months ago so it was nice to support the family by running this. I saw a ton of old friends and neighbors which made it fun. It was a fun event because everyone in my family did one of the races. I ran 4 miles before the race to get loosened up.

My goal was just to hit 6:00/mile for the race and not get to crazy. My legs were still a little sore from Saturday's run so I wasn't expecting much. I was tying my shoes and someone whistled to start the race. I hurried to finish tying my shoes and got going. Their was a group of 4 who took off. It was two high school kids and then another guy who I did not recognize but seemed fairly fast. I just settled in and let them do all of the work. At mile 2, I sat right behind the 2nd place guy and then moved around him. The 1st place kid kept looking back and saw me catching up to him. He looked about 6 or 7 times. I caught up to him and he said he has had hamstring problems the last couple weeks. Two no-nos! Don't ever look back and don't ever tell someone during a race you are hurt. I pushed the pace for the next little bit and then just relaxed for the rest of the race. The course measured long and I hit my goal of beating the 6:00/mile guy. Fun race to do but I could tell I haven't done much speed lately. Oh well! I am enjoying the trails more.

I cooled down back over to my grandparent's house to get 12 total for the day.

5 miles this morning with some of the boys out in the desert. Nice and relaxed. It was quite muggy due to the rain last night. We all survived though.

I wrote two papers and did some other graduate school work all day. I then ran 3 miles this afternoon with my varsity boys. They are doing really well right now. After wards we lifted. I had a little run in with the squat machine bar. I turned right into it and cut my head open pretty good. Blood was gushing everywhere I got a little light headed. It could use stitches but I decided to super glue it shut. Hopefully it gets better. I will at least have a pretty cool scar.

I wrapped my head with a pink bandage and then went to club run. I felt okay at first but then the entire day just caught up to me. I only ran 7 miles in the blistering heat. Big group today which made it quite nice. I was getting light headed so I decided to cut it short. Oh well! Not very often I did a 3xday like the Kenyans.

Out the door by 5am this morning because Katey's family is in town and we were going to Zion to hike all day. I planned on running the West Rim Trail in Zion but it did not work with our schedule. I just ran from my house and then did the Barrel Roll trail by the Jacob Hamblin home. It was extremely humid this morning from all of the rain last night. I was drenched within the first mile. The pace was not crazy fast due to not being able to see the trail for the first 6 miles. Although I was drenched the run was a good one. I wanted to go longer but time was not on my side.

We hiked all day in Zion with the kids. Nice and hot but lots of fun. We saw a bunch of horny toad lizards and even came within 5 feet of a small buck deer. I got enough of a workout hauling Norah around on my back.

Lots more homework today but I was able to take a break and go run Barrel Roll. I drove my truck over and started at the bottom just past the bridge. Their was lots of cloud cover, wind, and a little bit of rain. It was absolutely perfect running conditions. Nice run this evening and really pushed up the hills. Saw lots of rabbits and even saw a rainbow (No leprechauns or Lucky Charms though). Decent start to the week.

Nice cloud cover again this morning. It rained a little bit which was very welcome. I did a loop with the boys around Webb Hill and then we did 6x1:00min. hill repeats with 3:00min. recovery by the high school. I have started saying to many of the kids that they are part billy goat the way they can blast up hills. I had a goat when I was a kid and his name was McGruff. We named this hill by the school: McGruff's Revenge. 7.75 miles for the run this morning.

It was under 70 degrees when we started and actually stayed mild throughout the run. We ran out to the junction which was 4 miles to drop water and then did 2 big loops before finishing it off. This run has plenty of good hills and is all trail. It was not crazy fast but I really tried to push the uphills. I planned on going longer but Dave and Clyde talked me out of it due to my race in California next week. It should be fun.

The family and I came down to California to visit one of Katey's friends from high school. It was fun hanging out with her and her husband. California is pretty but a little too busy for me. Since we planned this trip, I was looking at doing this 50k while we were down here. Let me just say this was one of the coolest races I have ever done.

The race starts just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge near Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands. When we driving over the bridge I couldn't believe how much fog was there. It was really pretty looking over the ocean (I will try and post pictures). I knew this was going to be a gnarly race with all of the hills. It had over 6300 feet of elevation change. I really wanted to make sure I stay hydrated and ate enough at each aid station. I was pretty optimistic with how this race would turn out.

The race started and we proceeded to climb for the first 3 miles. One section early on had steps which required me to power hike up the mountain. I went out with 4 people and wanted to stay with them. I found out they were just doing the 30k so I was in the lead from the start. This race went right along the Pacific Ocean and their were spots where I was close to a 1000 feet above the ocean looking down on it. I ran through misty/foggy conditions. Their were some sections where I could only see about 20 yards in front of me. It was a little humid but bearable. One section took me through some trees and since the clouds were so low it actually rained for about 1/2 a mile. It was absolutely breathtaking.

This was a two loop course so when I came around the first loop I felt really good. I hit just over 18 miles in about 2:45. I refueled and then headed back out for the second loop. I made it to the aid station in Tennessee Valley and the volunteers were hooting and hollering for me. They were pretty excited to see the first 50k runner coming through. I knew at this point I was in the lead and just needed to stay focused and I would have the win. Once I hit the last aid station I knew that I only had about 3.5 miles to go. My legs were still pretty fresh and I pushed the pace back to the finish. Right at the end of the race a deer ran right in front of me. I looked to the left and 3 baby deer were wanting to cross as well. They looked at me kind of funny and decided for me to leave before they crossed. It was pretty cool to see that. I sprinted towards the finish and Katey and her friend were pretty stoked. I felt really good. I crossed the finish line and honestly felt like I could have gone longer.

I was very happy with the result today. 1st place overall and a course record. I am absolutely hooked on the trails now. I told Katey we are coming back next year to do this race. I won a coaster and a mug for my win. It was well worth it. I will use it to drink my chocolate soy and almond milk.

Keys to successful race:

-drank lots of fluids from my two handheld water bottles

-ate food at every aid station (PB & Js, Shot Blocks, pretzels)

-push the uphills (fast power hike or jog them) - many of the other runners were walking up them; I wasn't afraid to power hike

-push the downhills (many runners walked down the hills)

-just enjoyed the scenery (looked around a lot which kept my mind off of things)

-simply put, I had a lot of fun (I was actually smiling at the end of the race!)

The quads were a little sore after the race but I felt pretty good. I will look for another trail race this fall and see how I can do. I am getting into this. Loads of fun. I think I need to train on more hills though. This was hands down one of the best races I have ever had. It has been too long since I have had a good race.

Ran with Steve, Dave, and Dustin (recent BYU graduate) this morning for our Tuesday Tempo. Nice 3 mile warm up, 6 miles of tempo, and 3.5 mile cool down. Dustin and I averaged 5:32/mile for the 6 mile section of tempo. It felt pretty good. I didn't feel that great after wards and ended up chucking a little. Yummy!

6.10 miles in the afternoon with some of the girls. I did a warm up with the team and then did a fartlek workout. The team did really well with this. Hopefully they can use this week to recover and get into September continually improving each work. Should be exciting.

Thanks for the good workout this morning, oh wait it was a different Dustin. If this Dustin guy had the last name Ence, then it would be perfect he could do all my runs and races for me. I guess I will just have to keep my Little Buddha stomach so people don't get confused.

5.5 miles with the boys this morning under the lights on the track. We did a ladder workout and I got the legs moving. The greatest compliment I got was when we were done and the boys said, "Coach, are you tired?" They were not that tired from the workout. That is the greatest question I could be asked. Good sign.

I am stupid and did the same workout as this morning with one of the varsity boys who had to leave early due to early morning seminary. I pushed through the workout even though it was 30 degrees hotter in the afternoon. The kids were in amazement as they watched me fly around the track :)

10 miles this evening with Aaron. This was probably one of the more cool runs (temperature wise) we have done on a Thursday night. It was fun talking with him about Hood to Coast and just spending time together. Priceless!

I am tired.

Ran early with Steve, Aaron, and Dustin Bybee this morning. We started just off the Toquerville exit and then ran back to the store. It was really dark and it helped to have Steve's headlamp. The temps were really nice as well. It was a cool morning. Aaron felt frisky early so he took off. The three of us ran together and then Dustin and I pushed the pace a little bit. The route was pretty hilly but a good one. I am glad that I was able to do this run. Averaged 6:12/mile overall. Had a few pretty quick miles mixed in there. Cooled down with Steve over to say hi to Dave.

I just finished watching my Aggies almost beat Auburn! It should have happened. Nobody cares about special teams until you need them. Crap!!!

Today was one of those days that you read about in books. The temps were perfect and it was overcast for the entire day. The temperature never got over 85 degrees for the entire day and it rained on and off. I ran with the team this morning off of the Bloomington Loop. We did a fun trail run and then had breakfast after wards. It was a lot of fun. Great way to start the day.

I got a few things done around the house and then pushed Norah in the jogging stroller for 8 miles around Ivins and then over to my parent's house. I hopped in the pool after and it felt great. Nice start to the week.

I am just trying to get some decent workouts in so I can pace Steve to a 2:36 this year at St. George. I plan on doing another trail race this fall but I just don't know which one yet. If anyone wants to join us for the 2:36 marathon pace group, see you at the start.

I had the wonderful privilege of pacing my good friend Steven Abraham Lincoln Hooper Esq. today for the St. George Marathon to try and break 2:36. I have paced in races on two other occasions. I paced Jon Allen in 2007 at TOU with Paul Petersen. We helped Jon meet his goal of running sub-2:40. The next time I paced someone was 2 years ago with Clyde Behunin when we paced Paul Harmer to break 3 hours at St. George. He also met his goal of running sub-3:00. I thoroughly enjoyed pacing on these two occasions. Steve approached me about a month ago to see if I would do it. I knew he had put in the training and I thought it would be a great honor to help a friend out. I decided to do it and am glad that I had this opportunity.

It was fun seeing everyone at the start of the race. The weather was fairly warm but the breeze helped out a ton. Steve and I did a mile warm up and then hurried back to the start. I was excited to see what would happen over the next 26.2 miles for good old Steve. I have the splits from the race but am too lazy to type them up. Steve has eloquently written about each mile. I would not even do it justice by putting down just times. Steve has such a way with words. We were hitting our splits fine and even did better than I thought going up Veyo. I was a little concerned over the next couple of miles when I tried to pull Steve up some of the hills at a decent pace. He did well but I knew we were not going fast enough. We hit the half at about 1:21 and change. I knew 2:36 would be quite the stretch now.

Steve picked it up during the first couple miles of the second half of the race. My issue was I had to stop and use the bathroom a couple times. I also stopped a some coolers to pick up water with Ultima in it. I carried water and the Ultima so Steve could drink it and cool down. This helped him stay hydrated in the warm weather. I also broke the wind for him so he could draft off of me. I think this helped him out a ton.

We made to about mile 21 when one of my Varsity runners came and ran with us. It was nice to have some company. I think Steve got tired of me whispering sweet messages into his ear the entire race. I feel like I deserve a few Psychology credits to go towards my graduate degree since I kept Steve going and motivated. Shortly after mile 21 Steve's hamstring started to cramp up. I had to rub it down and then tell him he was fine. Steve picked it up over the next couple miles but then his hamstring cramped up again at about mile 24. He literally had to stop and stretch both times. I got him going in the right direction and Steve amazingly pushed through the pain. We were about a mile out and I looked into Steve's eyes and told him that we were going to have to push in order to break 2:40. He grunted at me and then started to pick it up. We rounded the turn by the bookstore and Steve started to push. This was nice to see when I knew he was hurting. Steve grunted and barreled his way to a 2:39:34 and 22nd place finish! Way to go Steve.

I was happy that Steve ran well and I know he would have broke 2:36 if the weather was a little better and if he did not cramp up. I am glad that I was able to be part of his 2011 St. George Marathon journey. It was unforgettable.

I was happy to see others do so well. I was very happy for Ben Vanbeekum for taking 3rd place and breaking 2:30. He has worked extremely hard for it. I am happy to see Clyde Behunin win the Silver Shoe when I know I could have beat him and won the dang bread instead of him :) I was happy to see Dustin Bybee run 2:32 for his first marathon. He has been a great addition to the St. George running community. He will only get faster. I am also very happy for Dave Holt reminding me once again that I am still the 2nd fastest high school cross country coach in town :)

I felt good after wards so my Dad drove me up to the corner of Diagonal so I could run the last 2 miles with my brother. He was doing his first marathon. I think he was pretty surprised to see me hop into the race with him. I enjoyed helping him to the finish. Almost ran 30 miles today. Yeah!

In all seriousness now, I would like to really get into some bigger ultra races and see how I can do. I also am kicking around the idea of trying to run St. George hard next year just to see how I can do. I think I have at least one more good marathon in me if I really focus and work hard. I will just have to wait and see!

You should do Mesquite just for some quality racing experience. I think you could train and come back and make a solid run at a PR next year but you need to get through a few marathon races to get the feel of battling it out when it's tough. Do it man your still young and have SEVERAL PR's in your legs. Us old guys only have maybe one more shot.

Big trail run this morning. I started at my house and then went over to run Barrel Roll. I did one loop and then ran back down the hill towards Santa Clara to meet up with some of the kids. I had them come over for a fun run today. I did Barrel Roll a second time and it felt pretty good. I pushed the pace back home. I was happy with the effort today due to the large amount of hills. It was a very solid workout. Great way to end the week. I think I am out of my funk now. I am a little sore but no to bad.

We are in Phoenix for the Nike Southwest race. This is the first time I have brought kids here. I do not have any expectations right now but just want them to get their feet wet and get the experience to build on for the future. I woke up and ran 10 miles along the busy streets of Phoenix. I did an out and back loop. The traffic was very busy but the weather was nice and warm in the morning. Happy to be in a little warmer weather. I averaged 6:48/mile.

6 miles this afternoon running barefoot at Toka Sticks Golf Course, where the race is at. I did 3 miles with my team and then saw Dave so we ran the course in the opposite direction. Felt really nice running barefoot on a golf course and having no one yell at me to get off the golf course!

So much going on this weekend so I only had time for 7 miles this morning. We had to hurry over to get to the first race. I was happy with the effort from my team but we did not run very good. It was a good experience but the team learned that running with the big boys and girls is a lot different than running against the same people they always run against. Something to build on for the future. Another solid 70 mile week.

It was right in the middle of a residential area. Kept the pace nice and easy. Tons of traffic in California made me not ever want to move here. Dave agreed with me. We dealt with a number of big hills which was lots of fun. We did 17 total for our run.

3.1 miles to check out the course at Mt. Sac. It was nice to hit the big hills and the see the reactions from all the kids. They are in for a treat tomorrow.

This was quite an amazing run with the terrain and the lunar eclipse we saw. Really excited to do this inaugural race in May. It will be sweet. Great finish to the week. 10.20 mile run with Dave and Clyde this morning. We were running all over the road this morning. We seemed to be a little tired. Clyde had a new loop for us to try so it was different than the usual. Clyde said I pushed the pace but it was him while we finished the run pretty hard. Decent effort for this morning.

13.40 mile run this afternoon. I did my Bloomington/DC loop in reverse like yesterday but I extended it on to the actual loop. I will see how tomorrow morning's run goes.

Good news of the day is that we found out we are going to have a boy! If anyone is reading this, I would like to take a vote for names. Here are the choices:

1- Donovan

2- Taine - (short for Prefontaine)

3- ESPN

4- Leroy

5- Samuel

Please cast your vote by Sunday, December 25th and then that will be the name of the child. Thank you for your time.

We are up in the mountains in beautiful Heber City for the next two days. We pulled in last night and the gate at the bottom of the mountain said that their have been quite a few cougar and bear sightings. I guess that is perfect stuff to run in! I ran down the mountain into Heber and then came back up to the cabin. The last 3.5 miles were over 1500 feet of climbing. Over a mile of that was in snow. I felt like Rocky minus the snow boots. Low elevation was 5600 feet and high elevation was 7850 feet. It was a balmy 10 degrees while I ran. Got to love this weather. It was very pretty.

I ran down more in the valley but ended up climbing back up for close to 7 miles.

Happy to finish off the week with some solid runs at higher elevation. Lots of climbing over the last two days. My legs are a little sore but they need it. Now I go up to Logan to spend more time with Katey's family. It should be fun.

I was supposed to run with Dave this morning but my alarm did not go off. Sorry Dave. Lame excuse. I knew I was in for a long haul all by myself. I started over in Virgin and then did the Hurricane Rim Trail, Jem Trail, Goulds Trail, and extended on to the Goulds Rim Trail. I almost made it down to the highway for the first 15 miles. I passed some mountain bikers on the way down and decided I was going to catch them. I had a good one mile climb and then caught them after about two miles. It was fun chasing them down. I passed a ton of mountain bikers today. The temps were 61 degrees when I ran so I shed the shirt. It was just a great day for a run. I felt great until about 26 miles and then my body decided to shut down. The last 4 were a bit of a drudge fest but I survived.

I really needed to get home but I forgot to turn off my lights in the truck so it was dead. I had to wait around for about 5 minutes and some mountain bikers came and helped me jump start it. One of them asked me, "Do you know Clyde Behunin?" I replied, "Who doesn't know him?" They noticed my running center sticker and said that they thought I might run with him. I talked to them and found out they are his cousins. Small world! A big thank you to the Behunin Family (Clyde was there in spirit) for the assistance.

Happy with a solid 30 mile run. I realize I need to eat more on my longer runs. I noticed that I drank plenty of fluids but I need to just eat more. I burned 7,440 calories so I will spend the rest of the day eating and relaxing. I love the holiday break!
