Enjoy running and fight off heart disease or diabetes that has been passed on for many generations. Try and break the cycle.

Personal:

I am currently 39 years old. I have a 11 year old girl, Norah, a 9 year old boy, Oliver, and a 6 year old girl, Myla, who are wonderful. I am a SPED Teacher at Desert Hills High School in St. George, Utah. I also coach the cross country and track teams at Desert Hills High.

I just rested today and didn't worry about running.  It is funny because I haven't had a day like this for a while.  I will not run tomorrow but do some yoga and then run easy for the rest of the week.  I need to get myself mentally and physically ready to start training really hard again.  I am tentatively planning on going to the doctor Friday to see if I am depleted in any areas.

Maybe the doctor will prove me wrong, if he does let it so be. But will venture with the comment anyway.

I would guess he will find that you are just fine in everything he is able to test. Two reasons. One, our medicine is designed mostly to support one's ability to drive a car and sit 8 hours a day in a chair without fainting rather than one's ability to sustain 5:30 pace in a marathon at altitude on a warm day.

Doctor: What's wrong?

Logan: Well, on Saturday I raced in a marathon and after averaging 5:35 for 21 miles in warm conditions my legs gave out.

Doctor: Mine would have given out after 200 meters. My diagnosis is that you are crazy for even thinking this is a problem.

I've had a number of similar conversations with doctors, even sports doctors. The only difference with a sports doctor was that his standard of health went up from being able to sit for 8 hours in a chair to being able to run a marathon under 4 hours. A marked improvement, but still not enough for somebody who's run in the Trials and wants to improve from there.

Reason number two is that by Friday you will have had plenty of time to replenish whatever you were lacking and it will likely not show up on the test.

I hope you are right Sasha. I think the heat might might have been an issue. I will check and see how everything is though on Friday. I was due for a bummer race on Saturday I guess.

Logan- is this the first time you cramped up like this, or does it happen somewhat often (during runs or otherwise)?

I cramped up twice while I've slept during the last 2 months. This was the first time it has happened like that during a race though.

Logan.... let me know what's up if anything. My left calf cramped up Saturday morning before the race. I was like "you have got to be joking me". Hopefully the dr. will say we need more Best Burgers in the diet.

Oh yea, i talked with the Weber State scout down here. He seemed like he was interested in me. It was pretty cool, i am thinking i want to go their. Do you think that would be a good choice.

Hayden you need to hunt down Tony Jones (from Hurricane). Out of high school he signed to go to Weber. he had a great recruiting visit and really liked the program. However, it didn't work out and he transfered after his mission to USU and was quite the stud. See what his thought are on the program to help you make your decision.

Weber State would be a great choice if you decide to go there. USU is not a bad program either. Both programs are tops in this area. Be patient with making a decision though. You have plenty of time to decide.

Hi Logan,

I am an Exercise Physiologist by profession. Obviously, one of my greater interest in my field is running. I think you (and many others) would find the following articles on cramping very interesting. Some are longer than others, so you may be inclined just to read the conclusions of each article in the "Muscle Cramps" section. Unless your visit to your doctor is with an acclaimed specialist in sports medicine he will most likely not know or give you accurate information on cramping as it relates to the most current research in these linked articles.

I hope this information will help you understand better what we do and don't KNOW about what causes muscle cramping. It may help your training approach towards your next marathon.
