Today was quite the adventure to ring in the New Year. I have wanted to do a 50 mile run for a while now and today was the day that it all happened.

I ran the original Zion 50 mile trail race in 2012. It starts and ends at Virgin Park. Decided to do the same route again. Happy because a few cross country kids came out and ran and biked with me. This helped a ton.

I didn't realize that today was going to be so blasted cold. It was 19 degrees at the start and warmed up to 31 degrees with lots of wind on the day. My water bottle turned to slush of Powerade Zero and Red Bull for most of the run. My hydration pack finally warmed up around mile 30 so I could drink out of it.

Ran from Virgin Park and then up to the top of Gooseberry Mesa, down the mesa across to the other side of the highway and up Little Creek Mesa, down to the old golf course, down to the old Diamond Ranch Academy, up to the Jem Trail and then back to Virgin Park.

No chaffing, hydration or food issues today. I was freezing cold but felt good. My right hip flexor got really tight around mile 36 but I stopped and stretched it quite a bit which helped loosen it up. I think I could have gone faster if it was warmer and not so windy. Oh well.

50 miles in 9:34. Great way to start the year! 2019 should be awesome.

Felt better today but still didn't want to overdo it with the legs still recovering. 10 miles along the River Trail with no watch. Fun stuff. Good way to end the week.

7 miles with the girls out along the Arizona Strip. Still feeling a little under the weather. This week is my sick week of the year I guess.

3 miles with some of the kids did the Kosmin test. Very excited for the track TEAM this year. We have 50 distance runners coming out right now plus 20-30 sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers right now. Buzz in the air.

Not the best week being under the weather but wanted to finish it off on a positive note. I went and ran the Barrel Roll Trail in Santa Clara in the afternoon. 58 degrees and sunny. Absolutely perfect. Fun chasing down mountain bikers and keeping the pace honest. Threw up my apple two times from lunch so that felt great on the run. Should be good to go again for next week.

I did 10x:20 sec. hill sprints after I finished. Felt good doing these.

9.25 miles total.

4 miles this morning around Bloomington. Cleaning out the system. Cooler temps.

7.5 miles this afternoon looping on the trails behind the school with the girls. Cooler temps means the girls were going faster. Fun to hear them joke around with each other. Such a fun group. The trails are always nice to talk about things.

5 more miles along Washington Fields Road getting drenched. 7:11/mile. Fun to run in the rain because it doesn't always happen here in St. George.

7.25 miles this afternoon with the boys looping around Webb Hill. 7:22/mile. Ended up dropping back with some of the younger boys. Excited for what these 9th grade boys are doing right now.

8.25 miles this morning with Steve along the River Trail. 44 degrees so I was in short sleeves. Slight drizzle made it a lot of fun. Steve is a good dude.

5 miles this afternoon with the TEAM. Did our card game with dirt hill repeats behind the school. Ground was soft and had a little bit of rain. Felt nice.

5.5 miles with another Progression Run on the track. Kids are looking strong. Had to leave early to take Oliver to The Grip.

5 more miles around Washington towards Hells Hole. Came upon two young girls crying on the ground with their bikes. No helmets and one crashed pretty good and hit her head. I helped her back to her Dad. Make sure you wear a helmet. 7:21/mile.
